The early Mercury FourStroke engines were originally manufactured jointly with Yamaha; Mercury provided the block, crankcase, crankshaft and connecting rods, while Yamaha produced the cylinder heads for the 50hp. Both models were completed with Mercury mid-sections and gearcases. [links]

To find your Yamaha outboard’s year and model number, locate the identification plate or sticker on the transom mounting bracket. The ID plate/sticker should be somewhere above the waterline on either the port or starboard side of the bracket.

Go to the motor and look on the motor’s swivel bracket for an embossed, metalized tag or plate that has the name of the motor’s manufacturer boldly stamped at its top. This manufacturer’s tag also shows the year the motor was built, or the model year on all motors except Honda.
