While maintaining that advantage other design changes compromised her performance on the wind and while well sailed, she was no longer at the ‘pointy end’ of the fleet. An earlier keel modification changed her balance. Fortunately, the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics providing empirical analysis came to the rescue. [links]
In her 1977 configuration, Courageous was known as an ‘easy’ boat to sail and considered ‘slippery’ off the wind. Although credit was given to the spinnakers designed by Robbie Doyle who has been heading up the sail design program since 1974, he demurs: “she has always been fast downwind”. here
Launched in 1974 Courageous was designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built at Minneford Yacht Yard. Sparkman & Stephens legacy remains sterling to this day; to wit, a high-end broker recently concluded a listing summary, "She is a Sparkman & Stephens design. What more needs to be said?"
In preparation for the 2019 Twelve Metre World Championships the hull was laser-scanned and digitized for the purposes of design optimization. An extensive CFD study conducted by Tyler Doyle resulted in a new rudder design by Tyler, Robbie Doyle and Jim Taylor Design (initially involved with her in 1977). Continuing extensive studies resulted in a new trim tab being designed and engineered by the same triumvirate. The end result eliminated her recent temperamental tendencies and Courageous is far better balanced and once again “easy to sail”

The Illusion is a one-design keel boat, based on a scaled version of Lionheart, the British 12 Metre Class yacht and designed by Jo Richards and Neil Graham in 1981. These performance single-handed boats offer superb racing in nearly any conditions, by sailors of all weights and ages - with tested racing performance up to Force 6! Boats are equipped with a standard main, roller furling genoa and are spinnaker capable (this boat does not come with a spinnaker), plus running rigging. This boat was COMPLETELY reconditioned in 2015, ALL brand new running rigging, brand new $1200 Skip Elliot (Elliot Pattison Sails ) Main and jib class legal sails, used twice. Complete with boom, knot meter, lead and gold ore ballast in keel. Foot control for rudder. Double spreader rig with wire standing rigging. This little boat is a BLAST.
This boat, to the best of my knowledge, has only been sailed in central Florida. The only major problem is the mast. The mast was in two pieces, I repaired the mast by inserting a metal sleeve inside the mast to reinforce the damaged section. I loved sail this boat and now ready for a 2.4 class racing boat It is a single person racing boat that was designed to look like the America's Cup 12 meter racing boats. They were first produced in the early 80's, and you can get new ones today for about $7000. They became very popular with older sailors because they have all the control lines of a big boat, but are only piloted by a single person so you don't have to worry if your crew is going to show up or not. (You don't have to use all the control lines, can sail just fine with just the basics) Another big aspect of racing them is that because you sit inside and can't hike out, it doesn't matter how athletic (or non-athletic) the captain is, everyone is equal.
Currently has 6 20lb and 4 15 lb bags of lead shot put in the keel and more ballast could be added. The trailer and cradle are NOT included, 2 roller furling jibs, 1 main, whisker pole. All sails are in excellent shape, very crunchy and practically new. more
Very comfortable to sail, has a molded seat that is nice to sit on and you steer with your feet. Doesn't feel like a kayak, and the opening where you get in is so large that it is very easy to get in and out of, and don't feel like would become entrapped in it if capsized. Just a hoot to sail, very fun - really is a keel boat that you can drive against the wind and heal way over. Very unique feeling being right there next to the water. Has a new bilge pump mounted just forward of where you sit so if you take on water, can pump it out. Also has full reserve floatation so if you become totally swamped it will float so you can bail the water out. more

I am selling my Mini 12 Illusions. They are 12 foot long sailboats that you sit inside. Most fun boats that I have owned in sailed in my 70 years. I have not used in 10 years and it time to downsize.

The hulls without ballast and be picked up and carried by two people. They were designed for 250 pounds of removable lead ballast. I only used 200 pounds as I was heavier.
