All right guys, I just bought this from West Marine. This is a universal Moeller fuel sending unit, 12 inches to 24 tank depth. So anyways, it’s a close—it’s actually not a close match. The other unit was a complete float assembly on an arm. This actually will ride on that metal shank that goes down at the bottom of the tank. We’ll have to cut that. So I’ve got to measure the depth of the tank and go from there. [links]

Happy new year, everybody! It’s the first of January, 2010. Hope everybody had a safe night out last night. I know I did because I didn’t go anywhere. Sat at home. I got two kids and a wife. Been married a long time. Just don’t go out anymore. Just kind of take it easy and watch the Dick Clark thing on TV.

Okay, I got all the screws out. Let’s see what we got. Nice. How, and pray tell, does that come out of there? It’s a little float. Ah! There we go. Awesome. So that’s the little floaty-bob thing. Oh man, and it’s got a lot of resistance on it. When it hits right there, it catches. Interesting. Could be what’s wrong with it. Cool. I’m going to go get my tape measure. Oh nice. Looks like there’s a lot of – let me turn the light on here. Alright, you see in there, a lot of corrosion around this seal. Let’s see how bad that is. Yeah, looks like I’m going to have to scrub that off. Alright let me get my tape measure and measure the length – the depth of the tank and figure out how long to make this rod.

Now, if the wiper is close to the side of the strip that is grounded, this indicates there is less resistive material in the path of the current, and the resistance is small; as a result of this lack of resistance, more current will flow from the fuel sender unit to the gauge. On the other hand, if the wiper is at the other end of the strip, there is more resistive material in the current's path, and the resistance is large; as a result greater resistance, less current will flow from the fuel tank sending unit back to the fuel gauge. more

In contrast, using this same application as an example, if the resistance that the fuel gauge sending unit encounters while taking a reading is high, this signals that the float has dropped and is closer to the bottom of the fuel tank, telling the fuel gauge that the level of fuel in the tank is on the low side, and the needle on your fuel gauge will point towards the empty side. However, in another application this may be completely opposite; low resistance will mean the float is at the bottom of the diesel fuel or gas tank equaling low fuel while high resistance will mean the float is towards the top of the fuel tank equaling higher fuel level. So, again, it can vary depending on the application. Of course, no matter the application, there are varying levels of resistance between the two extremes as the float drops and rises, and indicated on your gauge as the needle goes from showing a full tank to a tank that is half full/half empty (depending on how you look at it), to a completely empty tank, and everything else in between. Many different names are used when referring to a fuel sending unit, and they all refer to the same part. The most common are: fuel sender, fuel sender unit(s); fuel sensor, fuel level sending unit(s), fuel level sender(s), fuel level sender unit(s), or fuel level sensor(s), fuel pump sending unit(s), fuel pump sender(s), or fuel pump sender unit(s), fuel tank sending unit(s), fuel tank sender(s), fuel tank sender unit(s), or fuel tank level sensor(s), fuel gauge sending unit(s), fuel gauge sender(s), fuel gauge sender unit(s), or fuel gauge sensor(s).

The fuel sending unit is located at the back of the vehicle inside the fuel tank. It measures fuel level, allows fuel to flow to the engine and excess fuel to return back to the tank, and vents excess vapors from the fuel tank. On some vehicles, the sending unit includes the fuel pump and a fuel sock—a filter designed to prevent large material from entering the fuel pump. While fuel sending units may differ in design, their functional purpose remains the same.

Reed switch array sending units can be used with all gauge brands as it utilizes a 240-30 ohms range signal that is rated to BSP standards. An electrical signal is transmitted to a dash mounted gauge as the float determines the fluid level found in a tank. The signal is sent back by milliamps or ohms indicating an empty or full status on a dash mounted gauge. more

The Moeller Reed Switch Sending Unit is designed to consistently provide accurate fuel gauge readings. This sending unit measures the fuel level position by the position of the float on the magnetic shaft, which means no electric parts in the fuel tank for added safety and peace of mind. more

Boat fuel sending units are by far the most popular on the market today, but a new reed style is growing in popularity. The swing arm style is less expensive and can be adjusted to fit most tanks. Moeller offers two size a 4 -12” model and for tanks up to 24”. These can be cut to fit for less than 12” or bolted together for over 12 inches to achieve the desired tank depth. The reed style sending unit must be installed at the proper length for your desired tank depth. While this style is also a bit more expensive, it is more accurate when fuel sloshing occurs. The following information offers some guidance if you are having trouble with a swing arm style boat fuel sending unit. [links]
