The block coefficient is a non-dimensional way of comparing undetWater shape. You can visualize the Cb by imagining a rectangular block of wood that is the same waterline length, waterline beam, and draft as the hull you are evaluating. The Cb is the percentage of the original block that would remain after the shape of the hull is carved away. The calculation of block coefficient is: more

As we have discussed, true displacement hulls reach maximum speed at a S/L ratio of roughly 1.34. That is the number traditionally used, although with lighter and improved engines, we've seen it to be practical to push some displacement vessels up to S/L ratios of about 1.42. If you add more horsepower, hoping to make these hulls go even faster, you are just wasting money. Trying to climb its own bow wave, an over-powered displacement speed boat does what every tugboat does-it squats down deeper into the water just hoping to get out of the way of the massive wave that is being dragged along behind it. Not a pretty sight! [links]

Unfortunately, looking only at published boat data often tricks the brain into "apple and orange" comparisons. One good alternative is to supplement the things you have learned with what designers refer to as coefficients of form.

So now, in addition to all those glossy brochures, you are also armed with a stack of legal pads full of notes and calculations. You can make spreadsheets, tables and bar graphs. You can even make pie charts. But the question still remains—how do you evaluate what's out there? here

I was determined to get a boat with a lighter displacement for my third Aventura. Indeed Aventura III’s designed displacement of 9.5 tons for a beamy 43-footer was as close to perfect as possible and I always made sure to keep her weight down to a reasonable level. more

According to various search and rescue authorities and figures compiled by the ARC and other offshore rallies, more cruising boats have been abandoned in the last 30 years because of rudder failure than for any other reason.

However, those who plan to set off in a catamaran on a long voyage must choose their route carefully to minimise the risk of encountering dangerous weather. Always observe the safe seasons, and be aware of a catamaran’s weak points. Catamarans are much less forgiving than monohulls when weather conditions deteriorate. A catamaran needs to be helped to overcome extreme conditions, whereas a well-found monohull can be battened down and left to its own devices.

Deciding on the size of a boat is not only the most important choice, but also the most difficult, and it is here that most serious mistakes are made.

Moving aft, an ocean cruiser should have powerful midships and aft sections because they boost her form stability, and there’s more to form stability than just being broad in the beam. In essence, the shape of the hull should be designed to provide a lot of extra buoyancy when heeled over, working with the yacht’s ballast to keep her on an even keel. Here we break with tradition by building hulls with plenty of form stability. A drawback of classic yachts with narrow beam and an attractive wineglass shape is a lack of form stability, which can give them a horrid rolling motion when running downwind. more

All of these good offshore sailing qualities are designed and built into each of our ocean cruising models: the Rustler 36, 37, 42, 44 and 57. But whether you end up buying one of our boats or somebody else’s, it’s well worth understanding the key hull features that help a boat to perform well offshore.
