Salcombe is a quaint, unassuming town in the south of Devon, England. In the early 1990s, a discovery was made that put Salcombe on the map. A ship, dating back to the mid-17 th century, was discovered on the seafloor. It contained piles of Moroccan gold. Then, in 2004, another discovery was made. The remains of a ship from the Bronze Age were exposed due to a shift in the seabed and a huge number of 13th-century artifacts were pulled from the wreckage. It is believed that there is more to be excavated from the site, but its value currently stands at USD 800 million. here

Titanic is one of the most famous ships of all time. It sank in April 2912 and its remains were not discovered until 1985. It was assumed that the ship went down in one piece, so its contents would have remained intact. However, Robert Ballard discovered that Titanic had sunk in two parts, and what was found was disintegrating. Despite this, a number of items were in good enough condition to sell for thousands at auction. The overall discovery has been valued at USD 200 million; there is the possibility that the wreck still holds valuables, but they are now lost at sea.

The RMS Republic met its fateful end in 1909 when it collided with another ship. The ship was carrying 1,500 wealthy passengers, but thanks to the then-state of the art wireless radio system, an SOS call meant the onboard travelers were saved. Their valuables, however, were not and sank to the ocean floor. It’s believed that the ship was also carrying several million US dollars’ worth of gold intended for Russia, but this is yet to be discovered. In 1987, Martin Bayerle attempted to salvage the lost gold but was unsuccessful. Ancient Alexandria was one of the most important cities in Egypt, it was home to Queen Cleopatra and the Great Library, one of the largest and most significant libraries in the ancient world. However, a series of earthquakes and tidal waves caused the city to sink. In 1992, French archaeologist Frank Goddio discovered undamaged remains of the city, including a huge sphinx statue worth USD 600 million. As a result of the treasure, which is reported to be 17 tons of silver bars, 27 kilos of emeralds, 35 boxes of gold, and 128,000 coins, salvage attempts began almost immediately. The site where Nuestra Senora de Atocha laid at rest was marked and divers went on to other areas (as other ships were impacted by the hurricane). French pirate Jean LaFitte made his living attacking merchant ships in the Gulf of Mexico and then selling the stolen goods at one of the numerous ports he owned. LaFitte’s accomplice was his brother Pierre, and the two were so good at stealing together they accumulated a huge amount of riches and jewels. As a result the brothers had to start burying it. After the death of LaFitte around 1830, legends of his treasures started circulating. Allegations have been made that some of his treasure is buried in “Lake Borgne”, which is right off the coast of New Orleans. Kidd began pirating around 1698 attacking ships and gaining enormous amounts of riches. When he got word that he was wanted for pirating, Kidd wanted to protect his treasures and began burying them all along North American islands, specifically near “Gardiners Island”. “Captain” Kidd was eventually captured and hanged, and his treasures are still buried to this day. more

Like many merchant steam vessels in the 20 th century, the SS Gairsoppa was reconditioned into a shipping vessel when World War II broke out. In February of 1941, she was part of a convoy bringing in supplies to England when a U-Boat attacked. It took nearly 100 years to recover the sunken treasure of Ship of Gold. In 1988, the shipwreck was discovered using Bayesian search theory and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) by the Columbus-America Discovery Group of Ohio. Huge amounts of gold were recovered from the shipwreck that was valued to be around $100-150 million. A gold ingot weight 36 kg was sold for a record $36 million. In 1998, the wreck was discovered by fishermen in the Gelasa Strait in 51 feet (16 m) of water. The wreck location was purchased from the fishermen and a local Indonesian company was licensed to carry out excavation of the site. The wreck known as the “Tang treasure” held three main types of wares in the form of bowls: Yue ware from Zhejiang Province, 60,000 items of “Dusun” storage jars known as Changsha ware and White-ware, manufactured in the Ding kilns – earliest known blue and white dishes. Surprisingly, the ship of carrying cargo from variety of influences and markets are persistent. The cargo had the largest Tang dynasty gold cup ever found, gold bowls, green-splashed bowls from Iran, motifs from Central Asia and Persia, gilt-silver boxes, gold dishes, and many valuable and expensive artifacts from various dynasties. The treasure is currently valued to be around $90 million.

SS Central America was known as the Ship of Gold that sank with more than 420 people in 1857 due to a hurricane. The ship was carrying a whopping 14,000 kg of gold and this event contributed to the panic of 1857.
