The Carlton Hotel in Cannes is where director Alfred Hitchcock famously shot his muse, Grace Kelly in To Catch A Thief in the 1950s. During the Cannes Film Festival, it plays host to lavish parties and A-list guests. The Carlton Bar is where you can go to relax and take in a little sophisticated history, rather than have a crazy club night. You might even find the odd jazz evening. It oozes southern French class and you might spot the odd star. [links]

The Longchamp Palace is a local favourite and a place to have a spectacular night out without getting dressed up or experiencing over-the-top “bling”. It’s not that far from the centre of Marseille or the Cours Julien (where many other bars can be found), so it’s a great place to end your night dancing to the DJ or wolfing down food that you forgot to eat earlier. You might plan to just start your night here but you might not want to leave. [links]

. FRCS 101-A Gargoyles: a Symbol of France Gargoyles were important symbols adorning medieval Catholic churches, relating to Satan and original sin, but they were also important architectural features created with a purpose, that of a waterspout. Gargoyles predate Gothic architecture and have risen in popularity recently, although the symbolism has evolved from Catholicism. From their origins, throughout the mass building of cathedrals in Catholic France, to ornamental chimeras today, gargoyles have been important to the symbolism of France. Gargoyles were created for a purpose which is reflected in the word origin. The French originator is gargoille, which translates to throat. It from this French word that gargoyles are named. This is not universal. Although the predominance of gargoyles in medieval gothic architecture influences the English use of gargoyle, the Italian term is also a reflection of the original purpose with doccione o gronda sporgente which means protruding gutter. The German and Dutch words for gargoyle also reflect their architectural purpose with both alluding to water flowing.1 Although today the word gargoyle is used to describe any beastly carving on a building, technically gargoyles are only the figures which were used as water spouts. Chimera is the term for ornamental carvings, thus some of the famous “gargoyles” of Notre Dame are in fact chimera, such as the most famous spitting “gargoyle” of.

. Geography: France is bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain, Andorra, and the UK by the Channel Tunnel. It is located in the continent of Europe. They are in the timezone of UTC/GMT +1 Hour. The borders inside of France are the only ones that have changed, the outside perimeter has been the same since France was declared a country. Paris is the capital city and also the largest. Lyon is the second biggest city in France. People do travel from country to country, because they are all so close together, and it doesn't take much time to get places, like it does here. Paris is located where it is because it is suspected that the place was first chosen because of the possibilities of crossing the Seine river, and for the shelter the islands provided. The Romans used the spot in the same way and Paris became a cross between roads and the river, itself a important way of communication. The tourists who come to see the sights improve development, by spending tons of money, and boosting the economy. They do get in the way a lot though because at some times there are so many of them, and everybody is trying to sell them stuff, and there are lots of mobs, and pick picketers because tourists are known to have lots of money. France has a total area of 632,834 square kilometres. Of this 543695 is part of metropolitan France. Five major rivers flow entirely.
