See full version: How to Tell if Your Battery Is Bad in 3 Easy Steps

With wet-cel (flooded) batteries, water levels have to be maintained. If they are low, usually re-filling them with distilled water will help. But if the battery has been dry for a long time, it would have rapidly caused sulfation to build on the plates in the cells. Sulfation is the number 1 cause of early battery failure. Plus, charging a dry battery will burn it up. If your battery has plenty of fluid in the cells, but the color is dark, or brownish, this is also an indication of a bad battery. Even if one cell is brown, it is rendered useless and therefore the entire battery is, too. Time to replace! [links]

Sometimes you can tell if your battery is bad by simply taking a good look. There are a few things to inspect:

Having battery troubles? Yeah, we hear you. Almost everyday, we receive calls and comments about batteries that simply "won't hold a charge" any more. Maybe you've been in that boat before. Now, a battery isn't like a water bottle. You can't use up half now, and then wait and use half later. Also, electricity doesn't "leak" like water can. What we're dealing with here is a plastic box that encases a delicate balance of chemicals which are ready to interact with each other to produce electricity when the load is applied. here

To clear up a misconception: a battery isn't like a water bottle. You can't use up half now, and then wait and use half later. It's not a tank of electricity. Also, batteries don't "leak" power like water can. What we're dealing with here with a lead acid battery is a plastic box that encases a delicate balance of chemicals which are ready to interact with each other to produce electricity when the load is applied.

I have 20 40ah sealed lead batteries and 6 of them are kinda fat on the sides, you can feel the side a little rounded.

Can the fat batteries still be used or is it safer to recycle them, I mean they are not really fat but I guess they were over charged a little or to much.

Wait, I remember, there is a 3rd type of sealed battery - Low Matainance Auto battery, but nobody would try to use that in a solar application.

In what is often referred to as a “battery event,” a swollen lithium-ion battery may start to smoke or even catch fire. You may also notice a “hissing” sound without seeing any visible signs of flames. If you find yourself in a situation where this happens, it is important to understand how to handle it.

Lithium-ion batteries are vulnerable under high-temperature conditions, and can’t be charged at high voltages. In cold temperatures, the batteries function just fine, but cannot be rapidly recharged without causing severe damage.

Finally, the thermal hazard that a poorly-built battery represents means that transporting them requires precautions and is subject to numerous regulations. more

Next, if your device has a user-removable battery, you can try to carefully remove it. Note that the battery’s swollen casing may make removal difficult. If you encounter any unusual resistance to removing the battery, stop and follow the advice below for those with devices containing non-user-removable batteries.

The batteries have very long cycle durations and shelf life, meaning that they can be charged and discharged many hundreds of times before losing efficiency. They are easy to charge with inexpensive, low-tech battery chargers, and can be charged fairly quickly relative to other battery types. They have low self-discharge rates, meaning that a charged battery can sit for some time between uses without losing significant amounts of power. more

Despite these disadvantages, the advantages of lithium batteries are such that the technology has become extremely useful, and lithium-ion batteries are used in practically all high-tech applications.

First, should reveal my bias; namely that I’ve wasted more time with doctors than any other profession, and that includes lawyers in the mix. Also have to disclose that I bailed from a long trek in Colorado due to PVCs, which the ER doctor concluded resulted from hypoxia, or lack of oxygen. PVCs feel like your heart is stopping for a beat or two after every few beats. Scary, and enough to get out to a trail head and to a hospital.
Also have had three sleep studies that produced diagnoses of either “mild” or “moderate” sleep apnea, but have taken off a lot of weight since then. [links]

I know of people that tried to use CPAP but felt it was too uncomfortable. I had no problem with it. Especially if someone has severe sleep apnea they should not ignore this. Even if it takes you from severe to moderate or mild it would be a big deal. here
