Its bound to smoke more running on 50:1 than 100:1 but if it were mine I'd run it on 50:1 unless there was a good reason not to. you may well find 50:1 is recommended for commercial use!
Some people manage to rig up a system to divert the exhaust gas from the relief port overboard. That may help your breathing although when idling you'll probably still get gases rising from the underwater outlet into the well. [links]
2 stroke. All colors are almost useless due to additives for more difficult lubrication & a DEFINATE burning of oil constantly in their chambers.
My Evinrude 9.9 DOES do a light tan on 100 or 75 to 1 ratio.
I split the difference. 75 to 1 ratio. here
Hey everyone, new here to iboats but have used info from the site to restore my boat and found it extremely helpful.
Re: No smoke from 2 stroke outboard here
I have been watching but refraining from comment on the no-smoke issue. Typically the only time you would see any smoke is at idle. If the engine is running well and the recirculating system is operating correctly, even then, it will not be excessive. Correct mixture is listed as 50-1 but most people use 48-1 (one pint oil to six gallons gas.) I actually end up at 50-1 since my six gallon tanks hold about 6 1/2 gallons topped-off. [links]
Shes come a long way from when I started. didn't take hardly any build pictures:facepalm: [links]
I need to shoot a video the next time we are at the lake of the startup and blue cloud to post it here to see what you guys think. What are my options if my dealer doesn't want to look at it and diagnose the problem under warranty? I'm hoping that everything is fine and if not the dealer will take care of us without any problems. really hate to spend 40K+ on a boat and have the motor crap out in a year. here
Like the title says we have been noticing lately that on the first startup of the day we get a rather large cloud of blue smoke and the wonderful smell of burnt oil. This lasts less than a minute and goes away after that. There are no odd sounds or viberations coming from the motor while the smoke is puffing out or after it quits. Originally I thought the marina might have fogged the motor when they winterized it at our docks since this spring was the first time that I noticed the blue smoke. The smoke happened again last weekend after we had used the boat the previous day for roughly 9 hours of cruising and some just floating around) We have upper 170 - low 180 hours on the '14 yamaha 150 and it is only a little over a year old (took delivery in April '14). It's still under factory warranty (3 years) and has always been dealer serviced - 20 hour check -up - 100 hour oil change last fall when the dealer winterized the boat. We only have about 40 hours on the oil change so far this year and the level is up (checked that right after seeing the smoke the first time).

One question I’ve been asked many times by two stroke customers-bikes, sleds, or Atv’s. more

just bought a 2008 yz250 what fuel/oil ratio mixture should i use. I have been adjusting my main fuel jet and checking the plug after every ride then adjusting again, i am concerned about it smoking i have never owned a 2 stroke before how much should it smoke and when.
If you have any questions for me, please ask. You will get a quick, accurate, answer and I don’t charge a dime! more

Sorry this is no more help, but I have a 1990 150 that is similar to yours. a big cloud of smoke on start-up.. I have done all the same things you have to no avail. only happens after sitting for a bit.. Finally got tired of fooling with it and it has been like this for many. many years now. Other than smoking on start-up, no other issues have developed. spark plugs never foul. more
At startup the motor smokes really bad and smokes for about 2-5 minutes. Once it clears up it's fine and doesn't smoke much at all. I replaced the check valves in the oil supply lines as one was stuck open. I've tried to adjust the oil linkage rod (I have the Mikuni oil pump). I'm guessing with the throttle plates wide open I need to adjust the linkage so it's just about at the stopper (for wide open) There is no stopper for idle/closed. All 3 carbs have been taken apart, adjusted and cleaned.
I also have a 2001 90hp model like yours. it smokes slightly at startup. I did have to replace one of the check valves that had failed. But I would just consider it normal. doesn't smoke anywhere near like my older 150
