If your car runs on regular gasoline, you would never even think of putting diesel fuel in your tank. Likewise, you wouldn't try to run a flashlight on D batteries when it takes AA batteries. That's because trying to operate any electronic device or tool with the wrong power source can be, at the very least, ineffective. In some cases, using the wrong fuel can even be damaging and dangerous.
Before you begin mixing, make sure you’ve read the manual that came with your specific chainsaw for information on any unique needs it may have. If you lost your manual, online versions are available on Stihl’s website.
Unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89 is recommended. A lower octane can cause some issues, such as increased engine temperature, increased piston seizures, and engine damage. Stihl offers 2-cycle oils made especially for Stihl chainsaws. Premium quality 2-cycle fuels provide protection for your engine. more
Only mix enough fuel to last you one to three days at a time; this limit keeps the fuel fresh and minimizes the risk of any buildup. Never store fuel for longer than three months. If your fuel has been sitting for any length of time, shake the container to mix it up again. Storing the mixture should be done with care, away from anything flammable and away from your home.

The two-cycle, or two-stroke, combustion engine that powers a chain saw operates on the principle of a single piston that makes only two moves -- one up and one down -- to generate the energy required. To keep things running smoothly, oil must be added to the gasoline, and the amount of oil called for depends on how much fuel you are premixing, and to the specific gas-to-oil ratio specified in the owner's manual.
The general ratio for most two-stroke chain saw combustion engines is 50:1, though some manufacturers recommend 40:1. The larger number represents the amount of gasoline, while the smaller is the amount of oil needed. If you are treating 1 gallon of clean unleaded gasoline, a 50:1 ration translates to 2.5 ounces of two-cycle oil, while preparing a 40:1 blend calls for 3 ounces of oil. Use the same type of container designed for gasoline storage, measure correctly and mix the fuel completely before filling your chain saw. It's best to use the premixed gas within a few days and to shake it well anytime it's been sitting for a while to redistribute the oil completely into the gas. [links]

The Stihl MS 280 C chain saw comes with an automatic oil pump that continuously sends oil to the guide bar and chain of the machine. The trademarked Ematic Bar Lubrication System intuitively provides the correct amount of oil to the chain to protect the chain and guide bar rails. Two ramps on the guide bar rails direct the oil to where it's needed most, removing the need for an adjustable screw to regulate oil output.
Stihl advises chain saw operators to use an approved oil such as Stihl BioPlus or another age-resistant oil. Oils that are not age resistant tend to turn into resin that's difficult to impossible to remove from the chain, guide bar and clutch. They also increase the likelihood that the chain saw chain oil pump will lock up and cease working. Avoid using waste oil since it doesn't provide adequate lubrication and has been named as a potential cause of skin cancer. [links]
Before the first use of the chain saw and whenever it is low on guide bar oil, add oil to the chain lubricant reservoir. Before removing the bar oil reservoir cap, always clean any dirt and debris from it to prevent it from getting into the reservoir where it can contaminate the oil. Stihl has manufactured the chain saw in such a way that only a small amount of oil should be left by the time the fuel is emptied. If a considerable amount of oil is left, it's possible the oil output is insufficient. When too little oil remains, it may be a sign that the oiler is putting out too much oil. Either condition warrants having the chain saw looked at by a Stihl technician. more
