Around the mid-aughts, Old Town insisted in advertising materials, straight faced, that their classic 14ish-foot tandem kayak weighed 61 pounds. An enterprising reviewer on Paddling.net claims the Loon 138T actually tops 70 pounds. I believe it. This is the same company, incidentally, that claims our Rush and Otter XT kayaks weigh under 40 pounds. In their world, things like outfitting and seats don’t count.

Overall, the LoonBeast tested very well. Despite its heft, it has respectable acceleration and glide. It has plenty of room for Her Majesty, even if it doesn’t leave much room in the back for my feet. It has a surprisingly tight 17-inch wide cockpit for a recreational boat, and it’s so stable that it’s stunning. You need a wide turning radius, but the toddler can’t dump you out either.
