Pretty much every kayak lists a weight capacity. A common misunderstanding is the number and what it means. If a kayak lists a weight capacity at 350 pounds, that doesn’t mean a 350 pound person can paddle it. The weight capacity indicates the amount of weight a kayak can hold and still float. For a sit on top, that means it would be just at the water line so most of the kayak would be under the water. There is just no way you could paddle that. So if the weight capacity says 350, what is the paddler size that could paddle that kayak?

The most important thing though, before you buy, if at all possible, is demo, demo, demo!

But wait! There’s more! Just because you’re in the safe zone at 25%, it doesn’t mean it is dry, easy or efficient to paddle. To have less water coming in the scuppers and be more efficient when paddling (the kayak moves further per paddle stroke) you should look at a number closer to 50%. So for gear and a person to remain fairly dry and be efficient paddling, a 350 pound weight capacity would best be paddled by someone weighing around 150 pounds. That would give you about 25 pounds for gear. here

Entry level kayaks are often lower in the weight capacity. Make sure you check that number. For under a thousand dollars you can get into several different makes or models that have 450 pound capacities. And keep in mind, that’s purchasing new. Many folks can find great deals on used kayaks that are better made and with higher weight capacity. If you don’t know what you are looking for when you look for a used kayak, take a long time paddler. If they aren’t available, I’d be happy to help. Feel free to send me a message and I’ll do what I can electronically. Posting in fishing forums can also be a help. Many kayakers have gone through the process and can talk to you about key things to consider.

Motor powered kayaks give anglers an edge in multiple areas that make the overall kayak fishing experience more productive and easier to enjoy for many anglers of all skill levels. In addition to being able to arrive at your chosen fishing spot sooner, you can also save a considerable amount of energy and enjoy the ride by using a motorized fishing kayak. Having the maneuverability and stealth of a kayak coupled with the speed and efficiency of a motorized fishing boat is something that appeals to any kayak angler.

This kayak’s motor drive system is controlled using a simple knob that allows the user to go forward or in reverse at a wide range of speeds. While other motor kayak models can cause quite a stir on the water, this Jackson model is exceptionally quiet and stealthy. Users will find that this model also comes with the same premium features that Jackson kayaks are known for and the Flex Drive E makes this one a highly capable motorized option.

The most efficient motorized kayaks will often feature a ‘planing’ hull instead of the more traditional ‘displacement’ hull. A paddle kayak that is made with a displacement hull will function better than a planing hull simply because it usually travels at a lower rate of speed. A displacement hull will drag through the water as it travels at a higher rate of speed, unlike the planing hull, which will manage to cut through the water with greater ease the faster it goes.

It is very important to be honest about your weight, and not to exceed the weight limits. If you show up for your reservation and are over the weight limitations then you will forfeit your reservation at your expense. So once again, please make sure that you do not exceed any of the specifications listed above or below. This is for your safety and for the longevity and structural integrity of our kayaks and paddle boards. Damage done to any equipment due to misuse or exceeding any limits explained will be at your expense. [links]

A We are more than happy to share our knowledge of the islands, and to give you our honest opinions of your planned itinerary. However, we cannot make decisions for you. You are solely responsible for what happens on the trip and for determining whether this activity is appropriate for you. Renting kayaks for unguided excursions on the sea is not for inexperienced people. Thanks for understanding! more

Keep in mind that this is a water sport, so you should expect to get wet. You have the potential of falling into the water so you should have the ability to swim. PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices or Life Jackets) must be worn at all times. In the state of Washington you need one life jacket per person on a water craft. Please understand that our rentals are not intended to be diving or swimming platforms and your safety while on the water is your responsibility. We understand that at some point you may be in the water for what ever reason. Please be safe at all times by being mindful of the depth of water, conditions, and other water craft.

A You need to decide that for yourself. Thousands of people go kayaking in the San Juan Islands every year, and many of them wear nothing but shorts and t-shirts without any trouble. At Blue Otter Outfitters our position is that we like to be prepared for an immersion event and so we recommend immersion wear if you are going on an unguided trip in a rental kayak. Unless you are very familiar with the waters that you will be paddling in you can easily find yourself in a compromising position which could potentially cause you to capsize. It doesn’t take much time in the water to help you realize how nice it is to be prepared for immersion!

I bought my used 2001 Old Town Loon 138 a couple of weeks ago from my local dealer, I wanted an Old Town Pack Canoe but couldn't afford it so a settled for the Loon 138. And I have to say I've had a blast so far. I don't think I could have enjoyed the Pack anymore than I enjoy this. I haven't paddled in about eight years and I wanted something light and easy to control. I got it! It's easy to manuever, smooth to paddle, stable in rougher water and holds all of my camping and fishing gear (with the addition of external rod holders). Although it doesn't have a sealed hatch(which leaves more room to store larger gear)I enjoy every minute on the water with it.

Bel Haven Paddlesports really helped me on picking the right boat for me. They have a large selection of new canoes and kayaks and a good bit of used canoes and kayaks. They don't try to push a sale, I was there many times before deciding on the boat I wanted and each time the staff was helpful and honest. here
