Grease the center hole and the outer edges of the fins of the impeller with waterproof marine grease. Slide the wear plate down the shaft, aligning the holes on its corners with the bores for the pump housing bolts. Slide the impeller down the driveshaft and onto the wear plate. here

Dab your finger into gasket sealer and run it around the bottom edge of the pump housing. Press the second driveshaft seal into the larger of the two bores on the top of the pump housing. Squirt a small amount of white marine grease into the center of the seal to help you ease the housing and seal down the driveshaft. here

In order to reduce the potential of having your engine overheat or other major mechanical problems developing, having the water pump pulley replaced before it breaks completely is recommended by all mechanics and automotive manufacturers. There are a few warning signs that you can be aware of that will indicate a problem with your water pump pulley exists.

If your engine temperature is running in the "red zone" on your dashboard temperature register, that is an instant sign that a problem exists with the coolant system. Whether it's low coolant, a problem with the radiator, the fan or the water pump, it's something that should be inspected by a certified mechanic as soon as possible. One common misdiagnosis that unexperienced mechanics will make is assuming that the water pump is broken, when in fact it's the water pump pulley that has ceased to function correctly. [links]

The water pump on any vehicle uses a system of belts and pulleys to operate. Most modern cars, trucks, and SUVs use a serpentine belt which routes around the engine, turning pulleys, which operate various accessories including AC systems, and alternators. When the water pump pulley wears out, the pulley will refuse to turn, which results in a water pump that doesn't efficiently circulate water throughout the engine.

The most obvious sign that a problem exists with your water pump pulley is if it's physically damaged. There are multiple ways this metal component can be damaged, including having an incorrect sized or improperly adjusted water pump belt installed, vehicle accidents or problems with the internal bearings that allow the pulley to spin. This symptom is commonly recognized by oil service technicians when they are under your car and changing your engine oil or oil filter. If one of these technicians tells you that your water pump pulley looks damaged, don't wait for it to fix itself. Contact a local ASE certified mechanic to replace the water pump pulley before it causes significant damage to your vehicle's engine. more

Without a water pump, an engine will overheat. I ended up replacing my original pumps with a 12 volt inline water pump.

The origonal spec for the Jabsco pump was 900 gallons per hour (GPH) at 4000 RPM. The Shurflo Piranha livewell pump is rated for 1100 GPH, which exceeds those specs. So I knew it *should* work. Everyone I talked to advised me against it however. I couldn’t find anyone who had done an electric retrofit or knew how to install a water pump in this way. [links]

On a recent trip to Rosario Resort, I noticed that the Jabsco pump on the other engine was leaking profusely. With a year of successful trials and lessons learned, I decided to go all electric. I also learned my lesson about the pressure and put two 12 volt inline water pumps on each engine.

These two Shurflo live well pumps replace the belt driven raw water pump on my small block Chevy (OMC) boat engines.

The original pump for the sea water (called a raw water pump) was driven by a belt coming off the flywheel of the engine. The pump was made by Jabsco, and was proprietary to OMC. That means that when OMC went out of business, the pump went out of existence. When I first purchased the Rock ‘n Row, one of the pumps were seized and needed to be replaced. I was able to find a brand-new pump on eBay for $600. It was the only one I could find despite several days looking on the internet and calling around to different part suppliers. more
