Buying your onboard charger will be the best thing you will ever do. You need to make sure that your built-in chargers are compatible with your marine battery.

I'm a first time boat owner and have a few questions about onboard battery chargers. How exactly do these things work? From what I gather, you connect your batteries to the onboard charger and then you can charge both batteries from one plug in? (from the onboard charger) Is that correct?

Now all chargers come with a short short and a standard 3-prong grounded plug that you can plug into an extension cord, as Silvertip pointed out, when at the dock or at home. But to make things neater, they sell these little buggers.

Note that there's a big difference between chargers made for charging up your car batteries and those designed specifically for marine use--protections against shock are a major feature on all chargers designed to be used around water, and they're well worth the added price on these units. more

Also be aware that pricing on these units is based in large part on their amp rating--a 15-amp model will recharge your system three times faster than a 5-amp charger, so if you frequently have to have your batteries topped off overnight, investing in the more powerful models may be a must. here

2. Boat chargers like the Minn Kota Digital Linear Charger , though more affordable, features digital control, fast charge times, enhanced status codes, an advanced maintenance mode, multi-stage charging, and automatic temperature control. In addition, these chargers are waterproof, shock- and vibration-resistant and have a tough aluminum housing. They're also saltwater-tested and fully corrosion-resistant, and include short circuit, reverse polarity, and ignition protection. There are models for charging up to three batteries at once, and pricing starts around $200.

Don’t be tempted with to save money with an automotive charger; they’re not de-signed for marine use. Instead, choose a quality, ignition-protected, marine-grade charger that meets American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) as well as UL standards. Ideally, that charger will be fully potted (encapsulated in resin) or feature other waterproof construction, resist corrosion and enable mounting in damp or possibly wet locations. more

An onboard battery charger should have an output equal to 10-percent or more of your boat’s battery capacity. Err on the higher side if you’re unsure. Better to have more output than you need than not enough. here

There’s nothing more disappointing than planning to spend a day on the water…only to find a dead battery. Most of the time, it’s our fault. Failing to properly maintain batteries lessens both their power and serviceable life. Onboard battery chargers keep those batteries ready whenever you are. Here’s what to look for.

When choosing a charger, keep in mind how its physical footprint will match up with your intended mounting location. Ideally that location will be cool, dry and have plenty of ventilation. (Choose a storage compartment? Avoid packing it full to ensure ventilation is adequate.) Close to the battery or battery bank is ideal to lessen voltage drop and reduce installation costs but avoid mounting directly adjacent or above as charging batteries give off gases that can be corrosive, even ex-plosive.
