Hi Have a old 60 hp 2 stroke autolube engine three cylinder.
It seems that it dont run al cylinders. there is no over heating and extra smoke.
Have change al sparkpuggs and new fuelfilter before i but the boat in the water. Engine was running properly until to day when it lost power and only 10 knots at full throtel. In habour i removed the sparkplugg cable on the top cylinder when motor was idleing ( I think you call it idle?) and there was no change in motor runnig.
Removed cable on the second cylinder then engine stopped. Did the same on third cylinder and the engine stopped. it seems that i have spark at the first cylinder. but its no change in the sound of the engine. what can be the problem?

Here’s a short video showing how I checked for spark on a Zephyr. The ends of the wires were cut flush with just a bit of the core wire sticking out and I taped them together before spinning the motor over with a drill. You can see how the spark always jumps across the same two wires. This motor has great spark! more

Yep….World’s smallest production 4-cylinder outboard at 5.4hp. here

Last night I was able to get my 4378 zephyr to fire up for the first time. It seems like it was only running on half of the cylinders though. How do I go about checking this to make sure? I have a spark plug tester but it wont work with this motor because of the connectors are the screw on type not the push on. Is there a way to check the coils with just a multimeter? Also I am having trouble adjusting the points because of where they are located. Does anyone have any tips for adjusting these? I can’t seem to be able to get my gauge in there to set them. I am hoping that I can just pull the points out and clean them and get it to work but I am not sure. It was firing up and would run for a minute and then sputter out I know I still have some adjusting to do on the carb but it should still run better than it is right now.

Thank you everyone for the replies! Definitely gives me some things to think about. Jeff I think I am going to keep this one original for now so no neon for me, although that is a neat idea and I would like to see it done. [links]

I would think that your injector grounds would go directly to the ecm, and your five volt ignition module coil switch voltage would come out of the ecm to each coil to switch them on and off. Your twelve volt supply to your coils will come from one plug, injector supply voltage another, and your coil grounds on another plug more
It would be possible for the engine to miss on 1 3 5 if the plug where the grounds go were not going to ground, or you were missing the supply voltage to 1 3 5. or you were missing the supply voltage to 135 injectors. here

have a problem that is driving me crazy: my port side 2008 df300 is only running on 1 bank of cylinders. 1,3,5 are not firing. have hooked up engine to sds and everything seems normal except I have a map sensor pressure detect port blocked alarm. I guess this would happen running on 3 cylinders anyways.

If I was taking a punt I would be looking at the coil grounds plug, you should be able to check all that with a low powered test light or scope, I think an auto electrician would find the problem for you easy. [links]

Timing senors should all read the same to be eliminated. the power pack? <-- Frankly, it has always been easier for me just to replace it rather than to go thru the trouble to test it (parts on hand as test equipment). but for the individual, I know, it's a expensive gamble. here
In reading over your latest entry, the problem would need to be either a faulty timing sensor or powerpack to affect just #3 coil (a proven good coil). here

Also, if it came to that some other weird flunky thing was to blame. having a spare pack and the tools to change it would be worthwhile to have in your on-board toolbox as those things usually fail at the damnest times. [links]

Also, the wire that is attached to these pins and sockets has been known to break away from the pins/sockets which results in either a very poor or no connection at all. I've found many instances where the wire is held tight in the rubber connector by pure friction but in reality is not making any connection. more

The electrical rubber connectors that house a series of Pins and Sockets within them have a flaw which can easily be overlooked. The the pin or socket (or both) has been known to be pushed back slightly when pulling them apart and pushing them back together when replacing a component or doing test work. more
