Most people know what happens when an engine doesn’t have enough oil (it breaks down!) but fewer people know the dangers of overfilling your engine. What happens when you fill your marine engine with too much oil is the pressure inside the engine begins to build due to the windage in the crankcase and the oil pump. This places great strain on rear main bearing seal. Even after just a couple uses, the seal breaks and the engine will start to leak marine engine oil. If the rear seal is not fixed, the front seal will also rupture, which then begins to gush oil.

This is a situation you want to avoid by all means, thus it’s important to get accurate measurements. This most often happens when you top off a warm engine because of an incorrect dipstick reading. It can also happen when you change the oil by yourself.

You purchase 2 liters of engine oil and pour it all into your engine. You check your dipstick and realize that you have overfilled the oil above the MAX sign on the dipstick.

If you are only driving short distances, the fuel in the combustion chamber will slowly fill up the engine oil pan with fuel and therefore increase the oil level. here

If it is very much above the max-sign, I do recommend an oil change instead. here

I just went out and looked and guess what! A small amount of oil leaked out of the couling onto the ET. Pulled my couling and can see a little bit of oil at the front of the tray by the latch. Looked all over and can't see anywhere that the oil was coming from off the engine. Looked at on the top tray could see a little oil around the oil fill cap. Looks like it leaked out there and then dripped down the couling onto the bottom.

is this motor an auto lube or premix?

lower unit lube smells a lot different than 2 stroke oil.
smell it.
If it is clean 2 stroke oil , it is probably running down the drive shaft from the power head.
need to find out where it is coming from up there

There is thick blue line at the top of the page, on the left side in the blue line is three short grey lines. Click on the grey line and you will see "buy yamaha parts" Find your engine. The LU parts diagram will show you the seals you will need. If you have the money you may a well do your water pump while you are in there. [links]
