Q: Was I previously worried about being mistaken for a mobile meth lab?
A: Yes. more

I’ve never been a fan of taping and covering everything up to protect it from the over spray. It’s just easier for me to cut-in around everything with an angled brush and roll the rest on. Would a sprayer produce a more even, smooth finish? Probably, yes. But, because of painting over the decals, I have always figured the roller will produce a slightly textured finish that will hide the decals.

Well, I kind of break all the rules.

You can also to the 'roll-and-tip' painting method, roll on a coat, and then drag the brush tip across to smooth out the finish some. [links]

I did a trailer that way about 10 years ago, and the paint is still looking fine (dark green). It was an old rusty boat tilt trailer. I did some cutting and welding to reconfigure then painted it. here

Wire brush any loose rust off, use the Rustoleum rusty metal primer with a brush on the rusty stuff, bare metal primer on the new stuff or painted stuff, then two coats of rustoleum paint with a brush as top coat.

Kevco- not real excited about wiping down with lacquer thinner, it's an 18' trailer and has some expanded steel on it. Good idea on rolling instead of brushing. can ya guess how much I avoid painting overall considering I didn't think of rolling? more

Kevco,
I like the roller idea too. Wanted to see you pics but you have to register so I'll take your word for it.

But most people don't have a more than a grinder and a wire brush and a foam roller dose a very nice job with a bit of surface prep.

Use a new roller and do the next coat on a day when it is not hot or windy (slow down the dry time) and I think you will be happy. [links]

Foam rollers work well with a self leveling paint but with trailer paint probablly not. They do make a rattle can paint that works very well. amazed me how well it chilled out any rust..damm good stuff.

wiping it down before painting helps stop the fish eyes. or even a light sanding, just enough to roughen up the surface a bit here

After all the preparation you will take there so go to our first step. Let’s talk about how to paint a trailer from the beginning and our ideas :

Clean it with water and soap and make sure you can keep the trailer dry after wash it. For more secure painting you can clean your trailer with marine clean at the ratio of 1 to 5 into water or you can mix it like 1 to 20 or you can use warm water too. Brush rub with it and leave it for half an hour. more

It’s a safety process if you are on a tight budget but need to paint your carrier you can skip this process. more
