Before I properly introduce you to this special 45-foot express boat, I have a concept that I’d like to run by you. Don’t get too excited, it’s far from earth shattering. It’s certainly not something as awesome as combining peanut butter with jelly in the same jar. Man, that was pure genius. No, this is a bit simpler and far less innovative.
Since starting operations in 1995, Richards and his team have perfected and evolved his hull design. If you’ve perused enough boat reviews, you surely have read a line about a boat’s hole shot and time required to plane. Well, this sort of thing is not exactly appropriate in a review of the new Palm Beach 45 Express. The waterline grabs hold of the surface with a vengeance during the entire speed curve. When more power is applied the bow doesn’t shoot skyward, the boat just moves faster with a seakindly motion. This is a result of Richards’s slippery, warped planing-hull design that keeps the bow down without the need to apply any trim tabs at all, even with pod drives.
I mean no disrespect to the latter. After all, my former business banker was a godsend and eventually became a friend—well, right up until my venture crashed and burned. However, I just don’t see boatbuilding—I’m talking the practice of honest-to-goodness craftsmanship—as a financial enterprise where large investors are going to extract healthy yields to satisfy their own investors and consistently generate big-time profits. You’ll find evidence of this philosophy in every nook and cranny of our yachts. For example, all of the teak we use is book matched to ensure consistency of grain and colour. The Galley. Across from the helm to port, the galley has a stovetop and oven forward. Outboard to port is a single stainless-steel sink and on the aft side are refrigerator/freezer drawers and a dishwasher. There’s dedicated storage for silverware, espresso cops and dishes plus open space beneath the oven. here
Master Stateroom. Stairs between the galley and lower helm lead to the belowdecks area. The main distribution panel is on the inboard side of the helm at the top of the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs, the passageway to all the cabins is a straightforward single shot all the way to the VIP quarters in the bow. The entry to the master stateroom is to port and the berth is positioned across the beam with the headboard to port. Our test boat had a TV in the master with a closet aft and storage drawers under the berth. The en suite head is forward with his and her sinks outboard, a separate shower stall and a toilet. here
Cockpit Storage An in-deck hatch to starboard opens to access the autopilot hydraulics and while the port hatch reveals water maker that produces 75 gph (283.91 lph) and 1,800 gallons (6,813.74 liters) per day. Outboard on each side in the rear of the cockpit are two gunwale compartments. There’s also a central deck hatch that accesses the front of the tender compartment. The entire center section of the cockpit raises on two hydraulic struts to reveal storage for a 10’ (3.05 m)-long tender. more
