Abandoned seafarers have a right, known as a lien, to be paid their wages from the sale of the vessel, but lose those rights if they leave the ship, Hammond says. more

Since 2017, seafarers who have been abandoned and unpaid for two months or more can contact their ships’ insurers, with a guarantee of four months’ wages, under an amendment to the Maritime Labour Convention. De Boer attributes the rise in cases partly to better reporting of the issue following this increased level of protection. here

Forced to continue with their work onboard to keep the ship safe, they live on a meagre diet of rice and dahl provided by charities and the Indian consulate. In all, they are owed $260,600 (£199,300) in wages, they say, as well as their airfare home.

Even when Swaminathan manages to contact his family, via voice messages on WhatsApp when they can piggyback on another ship’s wifi, he cannot tell his little girl, who will be seven in June, when he will see her again.

In 1976, the USSR commissioned the Lyubov Orlova, a 4,250-ton, 295′ cruise ship designed to carry 110 comrades in comfort and safety as it plowed through the icy waters of the Arctic and Antarctic. The well-built liner survived the Soviet Union’s collapse, but eventually, the fate of the motherland befell Lyubov Orlova too. The ship’s owners ran out of rubles and the heavily indebted vessel was seized in Newfoundland. Tied up and neglected for over two years in Newfoundland’s St. John’s harbor, the once majestic cruise liner deteriorated into a derelict, overrun by the harbor’s endemic rats. Rusting and rodent ridden, Lyubov Orlova was sold for scrap.

Some ghost ships never give up the ghost and go down fighting instead. Like the Ryou-Un Maru.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Japan on March 11, 2011, was the fifth strongest seismic jolt the world has ever recorded. The quake rearranged Japan, pushing the nation’s main island of Honshu eight feet further east. That’s the landmass equivalent of moving half of California out into the ocean by almost the length of a longboard. The volume of displaced ocean was even greater, creating a fearsome tsunami that decimated entire towns and sank scores of ships. The tsunami also saved one ship. more

One such ghost ship just ended its voyage on the rocky shores of Ireland. The 2,400-ton, 250′ cargo carrier MV Alta was on its way from Greece to Haiti in the early fall of 2018. About 1,300 miles short of its destination the ship lost power. After three weeks of repair efforts and air-drops of supplies, the MV Alta was still dead in the water. When a hurricane threatened the helpless vessel, it was time to abandon ship. The US Coast Guard rescued the 10 crew members and left the unmanned MV Alta to its fate.

"Abandoned property" means all tangible personal property that does not have an identifiable owner and that has been disposed on public property in a wrecked, inoperative, or partially dismantled condition or has no apparent intrinsic value to the rightful owner. The term includes derelict vessels as defined in s. 823.11(1).

You as the owner are responsible for removing the vessel from the waters of the state and having it transported to an approved landfill for destruction. The cost for doing this is a fraction of what the costs are to remove it from the water and destroy it after it sinks. Do your part to help the environment, the safety of others and the welfare of the state by disposing of your vessel responsibly.
