One of the most important considerations that will show you the type of kayak you need is where you intend to use it. While Pelican Kayaks do not design kayaks for the ocean or whitewater, you will be looking inland when picking a kayak. Here are some of the most common consideration for choosing a Pelican Kayak: here

Pelican International is also the leading producer of plastic boats around the world. The Twin Sheet Thermoforming process used in the construction is potentially more durable and flexible than rotomolding. Additionally, Pelican also recycles 99% of the plastic that is cut off from the formed kayak when it is done. more

Most kayaks already come with all the extras included. However, there are a few different extras that you can add to almost any kayak. The traditional Sit On Top Kayak can easily be turned into a fishing kayak with a fishing crate. You will need to look at which extras are included in the kayak when you buy them. [links]

I saw this kayak at Academy today. I haven't been able to find any info about it online. No reviews for it on google or even any videos on youtube. This isn't even listed on Pelican's website. [links]

If its standable, looks like a decent boat with that seat. In general, I had a pelican as a starter yak, and the hull was flimsy and ended up getting two holes that were impossible to mend or patch from going over some rocks. That was my biggest complaint with it, it was a decent starter boat until I got my jackson. Have you checked your local craigslist to see if you could pick up a tarpon or other more expensive boat in the same price range? I see kayaks like cars, buying a used model can get you a lot more boat for the money. Let someone else pay retail for you. [links]

Weight: Consider your cartop capacity and what you can carry when choosing a kayak. A heavy kayak might require a wheeled cart to move it down to the launch site. [links]

Once you’ve thought about what you want from a fishing kayak, it’s time to select a handful that appear to match your desired criteria. At that point, try them all! Always demo a kayak before you buy it! more

Seat: Less expensive kayaks have molded-in seats or basic removable seating pads. More fishing kayaks are now offering adjustable “lawn chair” style seats with excellent back support.

The bottom line in choosing the best fishing kayak for your needs is that there is no one-size-fits all. Before you make a decision on purchasing a kayak for fishing, the most important thing you can do is to take stock of where and how you plan to do most of your paddling and fishing. Identify your needs: Will you be fishing in freshwater ponds for largemouth bass? Navigating streams and rivers to catch smallmouth bass and trout? Poking around saltwater harbors, estuaries and flats for striped bass and bluefish? Or do you plan to venture out into the open ocean and launch through surf? Also, will this kayak be strictly a fishing vessel, or do you plan to use it for relaxation and recreation with your family? more

If you’re intimidated by the thought of fishing from a kayak, you should know that kayak fishing is a lot easier, and safer, than it looks. For the past decade, manufacturers have been constructing kayaks specifically for fishermen, and most of these craft are remarkably stable and comfortable. They are available with features like rod holders, tackle hatches, anchor systems, and even livewells. With all of the options out there, there’s a better chance than ever that you can find a kayak that will fit your needs and work for you. more

SIK or SOK: Most fishermen prefer self-bailing sit-on-top kayaks (SOK), especially for saltwater fishing. They are inherently safer, since they can roll over without filling with water, and they give the angler more room to move around or even throw a leg over the side for stability when dealing with a fish. Sit-inside kayaks (SIK) are preferable for moving waters and in situations where a lighter-weight craft is desirable. They also provide a drier ride than a sit-on-top kayak. more
