Cruz's next film, Abre Los Ojos, caught the attention of director Cameron Crowe and film icon Tom Cruise. Impressed by the script and the actress, the duo created an American remake of the film: Vanilla Sky (2001). The movie helped make Cruz a crossover success, and her ensuing relationship with co-star Tom Cruise put her firmly in American headlines. here

On May 2011, at the press day for On Stranger Tides, Penélope Cruz stated where she would like to see for her character Angelica in future films:
Penelope Cruz made her film debut in 1992, in the dark film Jamón Jamón. The film's director, who had been unable to cast Cruz as the lead in another film because of her young age, waited until she was old enough for his next film. Her performance earned her nominations for both the Spanish Actors Union Newcomer Award and the Goya Award (Spain's Academy Award) for best lead actress. A year later, Cruz played Luz in The Age of Beauty (1992). The film won an Oscar (best foreign language film), virtually swept the Goya Awards and earned Cruz the Spanish Actors Union Award for best supporting performance.
At the age of 25, Cruz made the bold decision to move to Hollywood, California. Fully in command and on top of her career, she took on the role of a control freak and successful chef in Woman on Top (2000). That same year, she played the romantic lead in Billy Bob Thornton's Western All the Pretty Horses. Both films garnered critical success. here
When Jack is sent off alone to investigate the island, he comes across the magnificent Honopu Arch , on Honopu Beach . The beach is inaccessible by land (Johnny Depp arrived on set by helicopter), but you can see the spectacular feature if you take a boat tour.
Barbossa’s ship, the ‘Providence' is the HMS Surprise , a replica of 1757 frigate HMS Rose, filmed off the coast of Long Beach , California, though which you can usually see at the Maritime Museum of San Diego. And at the end of the film, the desert island on which Captain Jack (Johnny Depp) leaves Angelica (Penelope Cruz) stranded is Palominito , a small cay about four miles off the coast of Fajardo , on Puerto Rico’s eastern tip.
'Whitecap Bay', where a clutch of unfortunate crew members is left in a rowing boat as bait for the ravenous mermaids, is Halona Cove , off Kalanianaole Highway , about 10 miles east of Honolulu on the island of Oahu . The cove achieved screen notoriety in 1953 when Deborah Kerr rolled in the surf here with Burt Lancaster in From Here To Eternity . [links]
The mermaid pools were built in the grounds of the Turtle Bay Resort, 57-091 Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku , on the North Shore of Oahu . You probably know this luxury resort from its starring role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. [links]
Studio interiors were in fact filmed in the UK , at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, which is where the courtroom in which Gibbs (Kevin McNally) is tried by the oddly kohl-eyed judge was built .

In case you weren't aware, there's another Pirates of the Caribbean movie on the way, despite the third movie making a strong case for the franchise to sail off into the sunset, never to be heard from again. more
Now that both Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley have dropped out of the franchise (their love story nonsense crippled the two sequels) Pirates can start sailing in a better direction. The filmmakers have already brought in fresh blood with Cruz and McShane, but have also added more new faces, including Stephen Graham (Public Enemies), Astrid-Berges Frisbey (playing a mermaid) and Sam Claflin as, "Philip, a youthful missionary."

A whole batch of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 set pics have hit the net, and they give us our first look at Penelope Cruz in the film.
In Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides, Cruz portrays Angelica, the first female pirate in the franchise, who had planned on becoming a nun until she met Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Not only is she Jack’s love interest and rival, but Angelica is also the daughter of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).
“I found a very interesting character in a movie that is really big and it gave me the opportunity to see how those movies are made,” Cruz fondly recalled. “And I love the pirate world because it’s so attractive and so interesting. So, for many reasons, it was great. I feel so lucky that I can be part of this movie.” more
Though Cruz prefers filming smaller movies with less action, she called being a part of the blockbuster swashbuckler film a “big privilege.” more
However, not all actors have to go the extra mile to conceal their pregnancies on-screen. Take Penelope Cruz, for instance. She filmed the entire Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides movie while pregnant, all thanks to a brilliant strategy director Rob Marshall set in place to hide her pregnancy from viewers’ eyes.
