Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier 1792 provides excellent protection for bare metals including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper, bronze, galvanized steel, and lead. It forms an excellent bond to underwater metals and running gear, and inhibits corrosion on these surfaces. Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier’s smooth, hard surface will self-clean in service, and can be used above or below the waterline. The dried film of Prop Coat contains the highest percentage of pure Zinc. In early 2019, the 52ft steel expedition vessel Bagheera celebrated her 10th birthday. During that time, and in the years since, she has carried my wife, Krystina, our clients and me over 75,000 miles in Arctic and subarctic waters. This is the story of how Bagheera came to be . read more

Prop Coat Barnacle Barrier 1792 is now available in a quart-size can and, as always, can be used on all underwater metals, including saildrives, shafts, strainers and folding and non-folding props. Two or three coats are recommended, after which the coating will purportedly prevent hard growth attachment for up to 12 months. The dried film of Prop Coat contains an especially high concentration of zinc and self-cleans in service. It can be used above or below the waterline and is also available in an aerosol spray can. A fast-dry formulation makes it possible to apply multiple coats in quick succession, though it's still best to allow 24 hours before launching. From $99. In November of 2015 I had the bottom of my boat painted with Interlux Micron 66 and the underwater metals sprayed with Pettit Prop Coat Barnacle Buster.

The Micron 66 has been awesome. I just had the boat hauled out and 90% of the hull was clean, with just some very minor growth in a couple of small areas. The transom had growth and a few small barnacles; it's exposed to the afternoon sun, and that promotes growth. The boat bottom is cleaned every six months and it wasn't until the cleaning about 8 months ago that the diver indicated the transom was getting growth. Basically I got about 3.5 years out of the Micron 66 before the diver saw an issue. I rate this paint a 10/10.

The Pettit Prop Coat Barnacle Buster was a different story. It was somewhat effective for 6 months. After that the diver was scrubbing the metals on every dive. more

Almost exactly two years ago I hauled out the boat for another issue. I re-sprayed the underwater metals with Pettit Prop Coat Barnacle Buster and had the props coated with Propspeed. Again, the Pettit Prop Coat Barnacle Buster lasted about 6 months. The Propspeed lasted about 18 months, before the diver said that he was having to clean the props. In fairness to Propspeed, I believe the diver did not use a soft cloth on the props, as required in the instructions: I noticed some longitudinal scratches that appear to be from cleaning with an abrasive pad. I am going to have a conversation with the diver and insist the props be cleaned as recommended by Propspeed. For now I rate Propspeed 8/10. [links]
