While the engine is out is there anything else I should go ahead and replace? Starter perhaps. Anything else? here
To reinstall the engine an inexpensive alignment tool is required. Does anyone have experience re-aligning the engine, is it straightforward or better left to the pros? [links]
Update, the leak is persisting. Upon close inspection it appears to be the oil pan bottom where the pan slopes down and gets deeper. Its very flakey, I could actually break layers off of it. I guess all those summers of some water in the bilge took its toll. So at this point Im deciding if I want to tackle the oil pan replacement myself. Normally on stuff like this theres always, roll down work.
I have a 98 Formula 252 SS with a 7.4 mpi Mercruiser, Bravo 3 outdrive. I bought the boat 3 years ago and have been restoring it slowly. Ive been very good about properly winterizing the boat , even though the only water she has seen in this time has been on the trailer in my yard with garden hose attached. she runs perfectly. I changed the plugs, plug wires, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, flushed the fuel tank and she really just purrs, the bilge is clean and spotless..Well..the problem occurred forty minutes out on my maiden voyage. she ran Great , even though top speed seemed to be way less than i expected. I kept checking the engine like a nervous father and sure enough while sitting in a quiet Cove idling without making any noise.. i literally watched the bilge start to fill with all the fresh oil! I shut her off and haven't been able to find the leak anywhere? I cleaned her up back at home filled her with oil and she started emptying it out before I fired her up? Oil pan doesn't seem rusty. semms to be leaking from the rear of the engine somewhere that I can't see..Well obviously I'm gonna pull the engine but thought you might have an idea. T [links]
Re: 2006 4.3 Mercruiser Oil Leak up front
Is ther an online service manual I could buy and download to assist me in the job? Is this job difficult enough to really need one? more
Re: 2006 4.3 Mercruiser Oil Leak up front [links]
I have discovered an oil leak. Its leaking from right behind the main pulley from on the botton side. It looks as though it is coming from the timing cover. There is a small sensor(that you can plug in to to service I assume) just above this. I removed the plug and it has a red o-ring on it. I could then tell it was NOT coming from this plug deal. I reinstalled it and wiped it all down and it is definitely coming from what I am assuming is the timing cover.
It looks like there is plenty of room to do this job myself if I were sure of the steps. After removing the belt and a hose and a couple of simple brackets then there is a water pump that must come off. Then the main pulley which I assume I will need a special tool for that I will have to go buy. This should expose this "cover" that is leaking from the bottom. It is held on with about 5 3/8 bolts because I tried to tighten the bottom two but it didn't do any good. Still leaked. The "cover" stops ablut 1 inch above where the oil pan bolts up so the oil pan doesn't look like it will come into play.
You can not replace the seal, you MUST replace the complete timing cover. Merc nor Volvo even sell the seal seperatly.
You also have to remove the oil pan in order to replace the timing cover. From all the new boats I have seen, that is going to requier an engine pull.
If you still have warranty, you better get it fixed by a Merc dealer. here
