I have an old Sea King serial # 432032 Model # 6028925- it is a 5 HP direct drive outboard. I need to know who made this motor so I can buy parts for it, I need an impeller and seals and the gasket set needed to replace the power head. I have a new power head to put on but need the gaskets. If anyone can tell me where to buy parts and whom the manufacturer is it would help greatly.

FROM Scrooge: "You rave about this website like it was the best thing since sliced bread. Well, I think it stinks. Sure, it has a lot of good information for boaters, and they're adding more every day, but it will probably never be finished. Furthermore, I don't even own a boat. And I wouldn't have a boat even if someone gave me one. Boats are a waste of money and time and energy and money! They're just a hole in the water you pour money into. If you gave me a boat, I'd sell it quicker then you could say Baggywrinkle. Then I'd lock up the cash with all my other money so I could keep my eye on it and count it every day. Bah humbug."

DMSI’s version of Montgomery Ward was not the same company as the original. The new company did not honor its predecessors’ obligations, such as gift cards and items sold with a lifetime guarantee. David Milgrom, then president of the DMSI-owned firm, said in an interview with David Carpenter of Associated Press: “We’re rebuilding the brand, and we want to do it right.”

The 1962, still has the intake silencer, right? (It was eliminated for 1963). But it can be removed or gotten out of the way to get the carb off. Sorry, too many years have passed since I’ve done one to remember the exact details. But I sure would remember if powerhead removal was required. Been there, done that too many times.
Thank you very much for your help.
This particular outboard is a bit of a puzzle to me. I have refurbished dozens and dozens of the OMC mid 50’s outboards so I was casual when approaching this 62 Sea King. (It matches my 62 Sea King boat.)
What is puzzling to me is the fact that you cannot remove the plugs with the powerhead installed. One cannot even remove the plug boots, let alone remove the plugs. Additionally, the high speed and low speed control mechanisms (that attach to the actual needles) cannot be removed unless the power head is tilted prior to lifting it up.
Maybe that I am missing something but those plug boot will not clear the lower cowl.
Thanks again for your help.

Frank, I would be the first to agree with you had I not scratched my head for an hour in puzzlement.
The powerhead sits so far down into the lower pan that you simply cannot even pull a boot off. Pulling the carb would be impossible. Can’t even remove the carb control mechanisms.
It’s possible these boots are not stock but they sure look stock. This motor is very low hours. Does have the black coils (cloth wires on the coils). I just don’t think it’s been apart.
I have pulled it apart as of this writing but when I reassemble maybe the light bulb will light. here

Hm.m.m.m, I suppose it is possible that somebody has replaced the original “Sparky” boots with the newer, longer OMC boots. I can’t say what that might result in. [links]
There is something unsaid there. I’ve serviced dozens of those motors and never had any trouble getting the plugs out. Also, the carburetor can be removed without unbolting the powerhead.
I have one like that. Model 378/8823, 3.3hp. Built bewteen 1941-1942. The lower on mine is different though. May be that is a model 371/373, 5hp. #8816 or 8817
I bought a group of motors recently.
One of them "All or Nothing" deals.
This was one of them. It had the
remains of a Sea King decal but no
numbers that I could find on it. It
was a 2 cylinder but likely no more
than 3 hp. I didn’t have room for all
of them so I gave a few away this
being one of them. This is the only
picture I have. I thought one day I
would run across one but as yet that
haven’t happened. On the back of the
gas tank it has what looks like one
half of a hinge and I’m really curious
as to its purpose. I did find these
pictures of what looks like larger hp.
model on the internet but no
explanation of what it is. Surely
someone here is into these and can
tell me about this "Rare" or more likely
"Motor of little interest".
If the number is on the decal that may explained
why I couldn’t find it. There is no hurry. Just when
ever its convenient and thanks for responding [links]
Mumbles,
Your mention of the "hinge" like affair on the back of your Wards
sounded familiar, and I finally remembered to look in my
collection. I find one with the same hinge like apparatus.
Mine has a heavy wire attached to it in a "bail shape",
obviously used for a handle, but I have no idea if the wire is
original. Anyway, mine is a……
