Pirates of the Caribbean's fourth installment, On Stranger Tides, doesn't fare much better than Dead Men Tell No Tales. Ranking in at only 33 percent, its audience score isn't much better at 54 percent. Overall, a total bust. The critics at Rotten Tomatoes felt that this film relied far too much on jarring action-filled sequences and that its plot wasn't strung together very well. In addition, the story is no different from the previous films. Yet again, it follows Captain Jack as he searches for the fabled Fountain of Youth and encounters mystical and troublesome characters along the way. Critics do agree that Johnny Depp's performance is outstanding, as usual, but it doesn't make up for a weak plotline and overused tropes. [links]

For many fans of the franchise, At World's End is considered the last "good" film because it still follows the original storyline set up in The Curse of the Black Pearl. Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are still main characters, but that still doesn't save the movie from harsh critical reviews. The critics at Rotten Tomatoes feel that this film only deserved 44 percent. While it's better than the last two movies' critical responses, it still sits under that 50 percent mark. For many viewers, At World's End signified the real end of the series, as it wrapped up the story between Elisabeth Swan and Will Turner. Unfortunately, critics felt that there were too many characters and a rather incomprehensible plotline, which seems to be a pattern throughout the Pirates of the Caribbean series. [links]

Jerry Bruckheimer's iconic Pirates of the Caribbean series brought pirates back into vogue in 2003, when the first movie was released. Based on the popular theme-park attraction at Disney parks around the world, the movie series lasted until 2017, with the release of its final film, Dead Men Tell No Tales. The series created memorable characters like the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, and really brought the world of pirates back onto pop culture's radar.
