BOATSWAIN
The Boatswain supervised the maintenance of the vessel and its supply stores. He was responsible for inspecting the ship and it's sails and rigging each morning, and reporting their state to the Captain. The Boatswain was also in charge of all deck activities, including weighing and dropping anchor, and the handling of the sails. [links]

Pirate Ship Crews

CAPTAIN
Today there are many different misconceptions and myths about buccaneers throughout history. A common misconception made by many people is in the role and authority of the pirate captain. Unlike naval captain's who were appointed by their respective governments and who's authority was supreme at all times. Most pirate captain's were democratically elected by the ships crew and could be replaced at any time by a majority vote of the crewmen. For example some captains were voted out and removed for not being as aggressive in the pursuit of prizes as the crew would have liked. And others were abandoned by their crews for being alittle to bloodthirsty and brutal. Several were even murdered by their own men. They were expected to be bold and decisive in battle. And also have skill in navigation and seamanship. Above all they had to have the force of personality necessary to hold together such an unruly bunch of seamen. [links]

The single-masted sloop had a bowsprit almost as long as her hull making her perhaps one of the swiftest vessels of her day. If the wind was favorable, a square topsail could be hoisted to give her a top speed that could on occasion exceed eleven knots. The Sloop was a favourable ship for pirates and smugglers alike. This relatively small vessel could carry around 75 pirates and around ten cannons. The Sloop was often the ship of choice for hunting in the shallower channels and sounds. The Schooner which came into widespread use around the last half of the eighteenth century is a little of all of the best features in a pirate ship. Perhaps her greatest virtue lie in her shallow draft. She was favored by pirates of the North American coast and the Caribbean. Fully loaded she was still small enough to navigate the shoal waters and to hide in remote coves. The Schooner could also reach 11 knots in a good wind.

The Queen Anne’s Revenge
A hugely famous example of this process is the ‘Queen Anne’s Revenge‘ pirate ship, which was sailed by the infamous Edward Teach (otherwise known as Blackbeard). The ‘Revenge‘ was a French Man-O-War originally called the Concorde but it fell into Blackbeard’s possession after a battle at sea and was renamed the Queen Anne’s Revenge. In cases such as this, it was common for the pirates to choose a name for their pirate ship that had special significance to them. here

A Little Pirate Ship History
Pirate ships were rarely bought outright, in fact they tended to be stolen, or ‘acquired’, by the Captain after a battle or through a deal. So, in some cases, the ships would come already named. Of course there were those pirates who would change the names of the ships they acquired, like Blackbeard. more

For example, in the case of Blackbeard, the name was chosen because of his Jacobite beliefs; the Queen Anne’s Revenge was a nod to the displaced Queen Anne in England who had been replaced by a Hanoverian heir. Blackbeard supported the Jacobites’ cause: to reinstate her and her line to the British throne. In other cases, however, the names may be chosen to represent a particularly noticeable feature of the pirate ship itself.

Quite naturally, ships and galleons have long been the iconic image of piracy! Without his (or her) trusty pirate ship, a pirate captain and his crew would have been unable to earn money, travel or even have anywhere to live! With that in mind, it’s only natural to wonder how this essential part of a pirate captain’s kit got their famous, and often infamous, names. more

Pirate ships would often become as famous as the pirate captains who sailed them, so it always paid to think carefully about their names. After all, no pirate captain is likely to have wanted to be known as the infamous captain of the “Fluffy Duckling” – hardly fitting for terror on the high seas! more

The pirates of this area are vicious and intelligent, similar to the other pirates in the waters of Aden and Somalia. What is quite strange is that there have been Egyptian military personnel accused of behaving like pirates in the Red Sea. The military would use their advanced weaponry and tactics to pillage smaller ships in the sea. They were eventually caught and punished. Regardless, the pirates that are actually real in this area are equally dangerous. here
