Today we’re going to talk about a cracked engine block, how it happens and what your options are. A cracked engine block is such a big deal because of what your engine block is made out of. Most of the time when metal breaks, the answer is simple: weld it back together! In the case of your engine block, this, unfortunately, isn’t possible. Cast Iron has different properties than most carbon steels that make it impossible to weld. The extreme heat that it takes to weld most metals is enough to cause problems with cast iron and cause the surrounding area to be surprisingly brittle and weak after the weld.

You can get a crack in your engine block a few different ways. First, engine blocks can crack from excessive heat. Too much heat will cause enough expansion and contraction on mating surfaces and bolted joints to cause the faces to start cracking. In just the opposite scenario, very cold weather can cause your engine block to crack as well. Whether it is from the wrong mix of antifreeze and water, or you simply live in a very cold area, extremely low temperatures in the winter can cause the coolant in your engine to begin to freeze. Since water expands when it freezes it can push the walls of your engine block out enough to cause them to crack. here

Do this process until all the pins are in. Insert pins and the grind them down. The remaining space between the pins will be where the next pass of drill holes will go. Then do the process all over until you have a pin all along the crack. Lock 'N Stich supplies you with a hardening fluid to put in the hole before you screw a pin in. Once it is absent oxygen, it will harden and give a seal along the threads so fluids will not work their way out the threads. [links]

Grind off the head of the pin remaining down to the point of the block where it won't hit the socket for the next pin. here

I don't know if they didn't magnaflux it or if once they honed it out, the block weakened so I can't really say if they should have caught the crack or not. So like everything in life, I sucked it up, moved on and repaired it myself. [links]

Overheating can sometimes be caused by a cracked engine block, leaks from the cooling system, or coolant leaking past the head gasket. A crack in the engine block could be an expensive repair, but with K&W FiberLock Head Gasket & Block Repair you can be back on the road in 30 minutes or less. here

K&W FiberLock is the most advanced product for repairing cracked head gaskets and engine blocks. When there is a crack or hole in your block or cooling system, the pressure in the system causes heat to build up around the crack. FiberLock seeks out the hot spots and seals them permanently with three levels of protection. Military strength fibers create an interlocking web over the breach, nanoparticles fill in and create a solid bond to the metal and Cool-X conditioner keeps your engine running cooler long after the repair is made. FiberLock is compatible with all types of antifreeze or plain water.
