The hardener used with polyester resin is also called a catalyst. The catalyst agent creates a chemical reaction that allows the resin to change from a liquid to a solid state. This transformation is referred to as "curing" or "polymerization." Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP) is the chemical hardener used with polyester resin. more

The ratio range for catalyst to resin is 1 to 2 percent hardener to the total volume of resin to be used. For example, four drops of hardener will be 1 percent of 1 ounce of resin. Adding more of less of the catalyst agent will speed up or slow down the curing time for the resin. However, adding less than 1 percent or more than 2 percent will cause the resin to cure improperly and the repair to fail. [links]

Catalyst agents are usually sold with the hardener but can be purchased separately as well. The agent is packaged in a small bottle or vial that is marked to show how much of the agent has been dispensed from the package in drops or fractional teaspoons. The correct ratio of hardener to resin should be calculated before the mixing process is begun to make it easier to monitor how much catalyst to dispense. here
Polyester resin is recommended for use with fiberglass repairs that are above the water line on boats and also on other dry-surface fiberglass forms such as auto bodies and models. When preparing to perform a repair, you must mix the proper ratio of hardener to polyester resin to prevent the resin from failing to cure properly. more
Off ratio: Too much or too little hardener will affect the cure time and thoroughness of the cure. Remove epoxy. Do not apply additional material over non-curing epoxy. DO NOT add extra hardener for a faster epoxy cure! [links]

Well no, it won’t harden. It might eventually go dry and crusty, but that depends on the resin, and it would be super brittle in that state anyway. [links]

Adding too much of either resin or hardener will alter the chemical reaction and the mixture will not cure properly. For example, four drops of hardener will be 1 percent of 1 ounce of resin. Adding more of less of the catalyst agent will speed up or slow down the curing time for the resin.

To calculate volume in cubic inches: (radius squared) X pi (or, 3.14159265) x (desired epoxy coating thickness). Divide by 1.805 to convert cubic inch volume to US fluid ounces. To convert ounces to gallons, divide by 128.

TotalBoat Polyester Laminating Resin requires the adding of MEKP catalyst at the ratio of 7-8 drops of MEKP per one ounce of resin at 77°F (1 .0-2.2% MEKP based on the weight of the resin) . Mix thoroughly for at least one minute and apply immediately after. Adjust the amount of catalyst slightly as needed –add more MEKP catalyst for cooler conditions and less catalyst for warmer conditions.

For larger applications (where it is not feasible to count individual drops of MEKP), the required amount of MEKP should be based upon the weight of the polyester resin, to ensure accuracy. The use of MEKP catalyst levels outside of 1.0-2.2% may result in an inadequate cure, with laminates exhibiting moderate to severe post cure after demolding. The range of MEKP catalyst should be 1.0-2.2% based on the weight of the resin. more
