To help boaters who aren’t sure which chart they need, NOAA has launched a new interactive chart locator that allows people to select a chart from a map of the U.S. and choose their format. Whether downloading one of the new PDF nautical charts, selecting a chart to order from a "print-on-demand" vendor, or finding an electronic chart, the interactive catalog presents a highly integrated suite of navigation products.

After a three-month trial period, PDF versions of NOAA nautical charts will become a permanent product, free to the public. The free PDFs, which are digital images of traditional nautical charts, are especially valued by recreational boaters who use them to plan sailing routes and fishing trips. here

NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey is the nation’s nautical chartmaker. Originally formed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807, Coast Survey updates charts, surveys the coastal seafloor, responds to maritime emergencies, and searches for underwater obstructions that pose a danger to navigation. Follow Coast Survey on Twitter @NOAAcharts, and check out the NOAA Coast Survey blog at noaacoastsurvey.wordpress.com for more in depth coverage of surveying and charting.

The changes are part of a systematic reconstruction of NOAA’s nautical products, anticipating mariner needs as navigation transitions to a new digital age. Last year, NOAA announced the privatization of chart printing and distribution, with NOAA-certified vendors providing improved paper “print-on-demand” charts that fulfill a vessel's requirement to carry a navigational chart published by the National Ocean Service in accordance with federal regulations. here

Tennessee law requires that all mechanically powered vessels (including federally documented recreational vessels) and all sailboats which are principally used in Tennessee must be registered. (Boats are not titled in Tennessee.) Mechanical propulsion includes electric trolling motors but does not include boats powered only by oars or paddles. Boats that require registration must be properly registered before using them upon any public water of Tennessee.

Customers with an invalid HIN may renew their boats but within the next three years, our system may decline these renewals and any new owner applications in order to comply with the Agency’s Coast Guard deadline.

This stunning, rare Chris-Craft Cobra was recently captured at the 2011 Lake Dora Boat Show. Sadly, a number of brand new Cobras were scrapped by the manufacturer when sales slowed in the 1950s.

Pirates and Privateers will have its world broadcast premiere on CBC Television’s Land & Sea on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 12 Noon. Following the broadcast, the documentary can be watched on the CBC TV website at: www.cbc.ca/landandsea. Land & Sea is one of CBC’s longest running TV series and can be followed on Twitter: @cbclandandsea “The year is 1930. The place is Detroit yacht Club in USA. It’s all about Harmsworth Trophy – the motor boatings counterpart to America’s Cup. Gar Wood completes his Miss America IX and is getting ready. The two Swedes standing on the dock in white overalls are also ready. They put on their flight hoods and motor goggles and enters the boat. ”Sveriges” two V12-engines roar up with a thunderous rumble”. The words are Gits Olssons, a very well known Swedish journalist, and the scenario could have been a reality. A few members of the Swedish Royal Motorboat Club had real plans to challenge the “Silver Fox” Gar Wood about the absolute speed record at sea. Even then it was understood; the value of hosting the world’s fastest boat. However, the plans unfortunately stayed just plans at that time. But Ruben Östlund’s drawings remain. And the precise architectural description is preserved. So the possibility still exists today.? 100 knots was an almost unattainable goal, already at that time. Today it is still an incredible speed – something that few people will be fortunate to experience. And especially not in a boat made of mahogany! But now it becomes reality! In early August 2011 the contract was signed for the making of ”Sverige”. The construction of one of the most spectacular wooden boats could begin. The clients, two thrill-seeking men from Stockholm wants to realize the old dream of beating 100 knots with a Swedish-built boat. The boat will be built here in Holmsund, we have good experience of rapid wooden boats by having built the replica of Ivar Kreuger´s SVALAN and restored Max Gumpels lovely racer LAILA. The project is led by Anders Båthus with the goal of creating a classic record breaking boat completely without compromise. Welcome aboard on this year’s most interesting project.
