Arnold & Son’s new Time Pyramid watch was debuted before Baselworld 2013 and I covered it here. Although I had seen images of the timepiece, it was on the short list of watches I was extremely eager to get my hands on at the Baselworld watch show. Inspired by the design of ornate clocks, the movement was a beautifully symmetrical mechanism with an open skeletonized design that emphasized aesthetic achievements as well as open views watch lovers and novices alike can enjoy with ease.
Love it or hate it, the Time Pyramid is one of those types of skeletonized watches that you can see right through to your wrist. There are plenty of people who don’t want to see their hairy wrist through the dial of their timepiece. Other people love the enhanced ability watches such as this offer when it comes to seeing their movements in action. here
The Time Pyramid is an exclusive movement produced in-house by Arnold & Son for the watch called the caliber A&S1615. The movement offers an off-center time display, subsidiary seconds display, as well as a unique system for managing torque in the movement. The caliber A&s1615 includes two mainspring barrels. The idea is that one barrel will provide torque to the other barrel during the time when spring power is running out and torque goes down. [links]
Relatively thin, the wide case sits impressively flat on the dial. At 44.6mm wide, the Time Pyramid isn’t a small watch, but it certainly isn’t too large to wear with formal attire. The expansive view through the double sapphire crystal displays further helps to reduce visual mass and space. This makes the overall wrist presence feel minimalized. Perhaps a small detail, it is actually important how the 6 o’clock placement of the crown gives the case a truly symmetrical feel as there is no crown jutting out of the side. more
Arnold & Son did an amazing job with this watch but gave it no special name – that was rather lazy. “Time Pyramid Translucent Back” is the name that I am giving it whereas the closest thing Arnold & Son gets to a unique name (aside from the reference number) is “Time Pyramid Translucent-Grey Coated Sapphire Case Back.” Ugh… Anyways, even without a proper title, the watch is still exactly what you want since the caseback is really just one-way mirror material. more
That means that from the front of the watch looking at the caseback you see a dark reflection and no view of your sickly arm hair. From the back of the watch, you can see right through to the other side. So compare this steel “Translucent Back” version of the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid with the first version that has the totally clear sapphire crystal caseback that I went hands-on with here. And yes, this “updated” version costs a bit more, of course. How much will this specially tinted sapphire crystal caseback cost you? About $2,000. It does seem a bit steep after the original version in steel was released less than a year before. more
Would you like for me to remind you what the biggest issue is on watches with fully skeletonized dials and movements? It is that you can often see right through to your own skin and arm hair. Yes, those sexy-looking timepieces with skeletonized movements and dials can seem amazing in theory (and pictured alone), but place them on your wrist in a real world scenario and only those people with the most beautiful of wrists will have no reason to complain at all. This is actually a common “thing” which watch lovers can and do complain about.
So, to remedy this situation and respond to this concern, Arnold & Son has done a little experiment with this new version of their Time Pyramid watch in steel in the model reference 1TPAS.S01A.C124S “Translucent Back” version. This model will also outright replace the original version of the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid in steel with the traditionally transparent front and rear sapphire crystal.
Front of house, the sapphire crystal is cambered and features anti-reflection coating on both sides. The dorsal plane of the case also features a pane of sapphire crystal, granting spectacular front to rear views. [links]
Two, blued serpentine hands, located adjacent 3 and 9 o’clock, reveal the available energy held within each barrel. The hour and minutes are displayed on a sapphire dial, conferring views of the components beneath. A subsidiary seconds dial sits on a lower plane with part of its form located just under the aforementioned hour and minute display.

Recently, when I saw the Arnold & Son Time Pyramid Tourbillon, I was reminded of the friendship the two men shared and their overriding obsession with precision. This preoccupation with accuracy is manifest with John Arnold’s incredibly precise marine chronometers and Breguet’s legendary whirlwind, a mechanism highly prized by connoisseurs today. Indeed, the creation of this modern-day Arnold & Son provides a fitting tribute to both of these exceptional watchmaking talents. The hours and minutes are displayed on a sapphire disc, positioned in the lower part of the dial. A rhodium-plated ring frames the dial and features a black minuterie marked with a series of black dots. The hours and minutes are proclaimed with polished and blued arrow-shaped hands featuring openworked tips. more
