i have found that at least one peice of 1 inch thick, works fantastic for flatness.
you will need to make up the thickness of your transom however you can.
1x1 inch plus 1 x 3/4 inch. ect

Your boat transom—or the flat section that forms the square-shaped stern—is one of the most critical areas you need to maintain. And, if you have a wooden transom, then you know that you always need to inspect for rot to make sure that everything’s in top shape. To help you with this task, we’ve put together this brief guide on how to fix a rotted transom on your boat and how to identify this problem.

If you’re able to simply knock on the wood, you’ll be able to get an idea of whether there’s rot on the inside of the wood. If you get a “hollow” sound, that’s the sign that you need to investigate further by drilling into the transom. If you’re able to easily penetrate the wood by poking it through this hole, it’s a sure sign that you have rot. If not, then you know that the wood inside is still in strong condition. more

For more serious cases, it’s possible that you may need to get the opinion of an expert, who might have to disassemble the transom. But, if you can repair and strengthen the wood with dry rot in its early stages, you can do a lot to maintain the quality of your boat.

Hi 16. Welcome to iboats. You don't can't use Gluvit on wood. It's an epoxy that you paint on the interior seams of aluminum boats after they have been properly cleaned and prepped. It starts out with the consistency of honey to fill all of the nooks and crannies in the seams, but dries strong and flexible enough to move with the seams of the boat while on the water. It does need UV protection however, so you'll need to either paint the seams and/or install a floor over them.

id wire brush the white poweder all out. scrap up the inside real good. Id grind with a sander all the pitted areas, and smooth them all over with marine tex or 5200. let dry completely. the red 5200 is 24 hour cure. the blue is 7 day cure!! dont layer the 5200 too thick because it might interfere with sliding the transom boar back down. then you can do the glove it or any other aluminum primer. more

Fiberglass: What we call fiberglass is typically "fiber reinforced plastic" or FRP. Depending on the application the fiberglass can be chopped, strands, or even woven mats of glass. By itself the glass is fairly flexible but when a hardener/adhesive is applied (resin) the structure cures into a hard surface that is hard as steel. Fiberglass is usually composed of many layers of fiberglass/resin to increase the stability of the structure. more

One of my goals as stated in the introduction of this blog was to help people not only learn what getting into a restore could entail but also signs that a restore is upcoming for those who might want to avoid such a project.

Boat Construction Crash Course: In fiberglass boat construction a hull of a boat is created by layering fiberglass (more on this shortly) over a mold or some type of structure. When the fiberglass cures it becomes a rigid shape. In modern boat construction a mold is created and the fiberglass is shaped to that mold and a top and bottom piece of the boat are combined to create the boat (that's why most boats have a trim ring around them near the top of the boat. that's where the two piece join). A lot of the reason in modern construction for this type of approach is that it requires no wood products to be used to mold the boat hence no chance of the wood rotting.

The transom to the left is attached to three cross members. There is reinforced bracing in the back of the boat. The transom on the right attaches to six cross members. The more cross members the transom is attached to the better it distributes the weight and the thrust of the engine. more

The motor mount or transom is what supports the engine. Older transoms were not a long as newer ones and most had a piece of 1 1/2” wood to support the engine. Twenty years ago most manufacturers switched to all aluminum transoms. The piece of wood was replaced with a thick piece of aluminum to support the engine. Pontoons with wooden transom boards should be inspected yearly for rot. There’s nothing worse than launching for the first time in the season and having the thrust of the engine break the wooden transom board. Although if the engine falls into the water that could be worse.

An adjustable transom was popular years ago when pontoons used 20 HP engines. You could use a short shaft engine and in shallow water you’d raise the engine by pulling up on the lever. (early trim and tilt).

Modern triple tube pontoon boat sometimes have the motor pod as a part of the center pontoon. Other brands may have a traditional transom with the center tube bolted in front.
