Proper shaft length selection is more critical with bow mount motors (as compared to transom mount). Bow-to-water distances tend to vary more from boat to boat, and the bow moves much more on the water than the transom. As such, it's important to make sure you select the proper shaft length. Start by measuring the distance from the horizontal mounting point on the bow to the waterline, then add 20" to this measurement. Generally, you will want a shaft length that is equal to or greater than this sum, but not less. The following factors may be further considerations:

Freshwater: Bow to Water Line + 20" = Minimum Required Shaft Length

If you're trying to determine how long your existing shaft is - or take measurements on your own boat - it's helpful to know exactly how the shaft is measured. Shaft measurements are generally taken from the base of the motor head to top of the propeller housing, as seen below, however there are exceptions that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and perhaps even model to model.

3. Try to measure with a full tank of fuel, gear etc. in order to get an idea of how much it will impact bow rise. You are looking to measure under "real world conditions." here

While it may be helpful to measure the shaft length of your motor, it should not be the only factor because it is actually difficult to determine the "rated" (manufacturer specified) shaft length. Ultimately, you should use either the "rated" shaft length the Bow to Waterline measurement is more reliable.

4. If at all possible, try not to fall overboard when taking your measurement.; it's embarrassing. (See Below) [links]

A trolling motor will run off of electricity, which means you’ll need a battery. Don’t forget to account for the weight of the battery when choosing a motor.

Some people will opt not to bring a battery with them at all. These people will instead use a special solar power setup that works well with a trolling motor. This setup type is relatively new, so that you may have limited options with this particular type of setup.

To do this, mount a piece of painted angle iron or a waterproofed board across the back of the kayak. Make sure it is sturdy enough to hold the clamp that came with your trolling motor. here
