A racing yacht is a high-end vessel that is built for performance, generally costing far more than average racing vessels. Performance racing in the superyacht world is growing in popularity, with the richest boaters in the world competing to build the best racing yachts. These yachts are characterized by racing engines and other sport features, as opposed to sailing or recreational yachts that include standard equipment and designs. Typically, the v-shaped hull design will be more pronounced in racing yachts, as it offers better agility in cutting through rough waters.
Historically, racing yachts were built with premium marine wood. Today, the most authentic models are still hand-crafted using high-quality wood materials, but there are also a growing number of yachts available that are constructed of fiberglass, lightweight molded aluminum, and other materials. Although most designs are custom builds in the high-end racing scene, there are mass-produced racing yachts available in multiple styles.
Some of the best-known, masterful builders of racer sailing vessels currently include: Beneteau, J Boats, Catalina, C&C and Ericson. These builders may construct racer sailing vessels with secondary inboard, outboard, electric and outboard-4S propulsion systems, available in diesel, gas, electric and other fuel systems. more
Racer sailing vessels have a rich legacy as vessels that are sought-after due to their exceedingly deep draft and wide beam - attributes that make these vessels exceptionally favorable for racing. The maximum amount of passengers for racer sailing vessels currently listed on Boat Trader is 14 people, with an average capacity of 10 people. [links]

The fundamentals of racing are most easily learned in small boats. Many small boats are designed specifically for youth, and most provide a lifetime of enjoyment for adults as well. Because of their size and simplicity, many small sailboats can be sailed singlehanded or with a crew member or two.
Below is a comprehensive list of one-design classes. To update the information for your class and access the many resources available, go to My US Sailing. Your class does not have to be a member of US Sailing in order to be listed, however, only member classes have links to their web pages [links]
