Our test boat is optioned with Lowrance’s upscale high-definition color fishfinders at the bow, and the sporty, ergonomically correct helm also features easy-to-read multifunction gauges. The standard package includes a pair of Lowrance X-135 units, one of the nicer monochrome LCD screens on the market. more

Often when a company puts out a smaller version of its pro battlewagon, more than just a few feet are sacrificed in the translation. Systems such as livewells can take a hit in quality so the boat can be offered at a lower price point. That’s not Ranger’s style as evidenced by the new Z518, which features many of the same bells and whistles as its flagship model, the Z522 Comanche.

This past winter, Ranger escaped intact from the Genmar bankruptcy under the ownership of Platinum Equity and is blazing ahead with new boats such as the Z518 Comanche, the smallest member of the famed tournamentready 500 series.

Unique Factor
When most high-end companies decide to build a “price boat” the usual scheme is to seriously de-feature and uglify it to make the higher-priced models more attractive. Ranger did neither with the Z100 series, which starts in the low $30,000 range. Our test boat features an elongated single console (a double is also available), and because it’s taller than the one on the 188VX, which the Z118 replaces, it offers more protection from the elements. The console is patterned after the one in the tournament war wagon Z521 Comanche, so there’s room for a flush-mounted standard Lowrance Mark-5X fishfinder, situated front and center.
Although the Z118 measures just 18 feet, 8 inches, the forward casting deck stretches all the way to the console, giving the primary angler enough room to do the rear-end-spanking, pony-gallop victory dance when he finally lips his first 10-pounder. One of the things that distinguishes tournament boats from recreational angler platforms is rod storage. Some compartments are just a giant locker where you pile your rods like in a game of Pickup Sticks. The Z118 has two lockers with dedicated tube storage for rods up to 8 feet, so when you have to grab a rod quickly it won’t be “lure welded” to the others in a big lump. There’s also plenty of room for Plano-style tackle boxes with dividers to keep things tidy. [links]

By Alan Jones
As one of the elite bass-boat brands, Ranger has never been shy about charging for the privilege of owning one of its models, meaning a lot of anglers remained admirers from afar. But this year, those on a budget can step off the sidelines and get into the game with the new Z118, the smallest in a new series of Ranger boats.

Handling
Many bass-boat manufacturers seem to think there is only one speed for their boats: wide-open. But at Ranger the emphasis is on total performance, even at rest or trolling speeds – where anglers spend most of their time. So, the engineers came up with the Rite-Trac keel, which keeps more of the hull in the water and out of the wind for incredible side-to-side stability and straighter tracking with less lateral drift. Having a beam near 8 feet also makes the Z118 proportionally wider than most boats, for more room and stability. Because of its length, the Z118 can maneuver in tight quarters and go many places 22-footers can’t.
The Z118 isn’t screaming fast, but it is very stable up on its pad at top speed, and we glided over the choppier sections without a lot of side-to-side wobbling. We were able to hold plane at 17 mph, which should satisfy anglers who want to slow down to check things out without dropping all the way down or traverse the windy side of the lake. here

Performance
Although the dimensions of the Z118 and its sister boat, the Z518 Comanche, are the same, the maximum horsepower rating for the Z118 is 50 hp less, at 150. Our test boat is powered by an Evinrude 150 H.O., which puts out slightly more than its advertised power and proved to be a good match. A big plus on the Ranger is its moderate bowrise, which can be pretty spectacular on other bass boats.
We got on plane in just 3.5 seconds and reached 30 mph in 8.4 seconds. Top speed was 58 mph; at that speed, we were able to air out the hull and let her fly with very little wetted surface. We have tested the more expensive Z518 Comanche equipped with the larger Mercury 200 hp OptiMax. It has a top speed of 67.3 mph, but if you are plying a smaller lake or just aren’t in that much of a hurry, 150 hp works just fine. more

This ^ I just know going 75-80 mph helps you catch more fish. LMAO

The term "literally fly" has different meanings to different people. Having owned a few (like 7) Bullets and a couple Allisons my definition of flying may be a little different than someone else. For a premium tournament bass rig loaded with all the stuff a guide carries in his rig and two people, 72 is literally flying. [links]

I've owned 3 Rangers and none were fast for the power on the transom but they were not "lead sled" like so many people make them out to be. here
