The gasket from a 93 200/225 will work. The 3 cylinder 70's are the same too I believe. more

On a 1986 to 92 carb'd 90* V6 looper you can use the t-stat cap, gasket and spring from a 93 & newer 200/225. Remove the diaphram from the vernatherm and reinstall with the new cap, gasket & spring. Be sure to get the cap and spring from the same year. There are a couple different caps and they'll all work, just consider the cap and spring a set. [links]

The boat thermostat is an often underappreciated component of every craft. This mechanism regulates engine temperature and ensures optimal performance. Boat engines run at max performance which can generate a lot of heat. Should the engine begin to overheat, thermostats provide the operator the first line of defense in preventing an expensive repair or possible replacement. In addition, the thermostat other assignment is to control emission levels so your boat stays regulation-compliant. more

ATF, I'm not really familiar with the optimax's. But that sounds good to me.. Again this is water temp readings. 89F does seem low though.

Where's Trumanlake when you need him.

Way lower! The larger Merc's have 143°F thermostats. Over 170°F is overheating. If it's too hot to hold your fingers on the head for almost all water cooled outboards, it's too hot. here

Lenny: That's what a new thermostat looks like, and there's an old one. [links]

Chris: The easiest way is to refer back to the service manual, and if you don't have the service manual you can go on the internet and Google, and find it there.

Chris Breeden, Service Manager/Yamaha Master Tech: Well, one of the easiest signs is you get a high idle and oil dilution. The oil dilution is going to be fuel finding its way past the rings and getting into the oil. more
