The online course consists of 1 module that must be completed within 6 months. The module consists of text, charts and pictures to help with your learning and 10 multiple choice questions which you are expected to pass by 70%.
Grand Banks off Newfoundland. From there, he moved to work as a marine surveyor working for the Five Anchors Group in Lagos Nigeria surveying damage to ships and cargo. Following this he had his first contact with Maritime Services International when he was contracted to return to Lagos to help release vessels from arrest. [links]
This time he studied an MSc in Marine Resources, Development and Protection at Heriot-Watt University. This included a dissertation on the development of the harbours at Dunedin and Port Chalmers in Otago, New Zealand and he has recently learnt that this has been referred to in the current study preceding the possible enlargement of the container terminal at Port Chalmers. The course has been designed to be modular and can be delivered flexibly over an extended period of up to three years allowing training to be consolidated with periods of practical work. This is a premium offering on hydrographic surveying aligned to meet the minimum standards of competence jointly published by the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the International Cartographic Association (ICA). The Academy has received recognition for this program as S5 Cat B from the International Board (IB) which defines and publishes the international standards. The course is offered with options in (a) Marine Cartography and (b) Port and Coastal Hydrography.
The program is designed primarily for entry level hydrographic surveyors, particularly those involved with emergent national hydrographic offices wishing to conform to the IHO standards. The program components include: introduction to nautical science, bathymetry, tidal flows, geodesy and map projections, hydrographic practice, hydrographic data management, environmental science and legal issues. Successful completion of the Course will equip the graduating student with the underpinning theory and training at the Category B level of S-5. Together with a specified period of experience covering the gamut of the course and when the program is recognised by the IB the student will receive the internationally recognised certificate of qualification. As in all fields, the student is ultimately responsible for keeping his or her ongoing competence current. [links]
