We also recommend performing this soak for all brand new anchor rode before its run through the windlass to condition the line properly. The fabric softener helps to remove the salt and dirt out of the line, which causes the line to deteriorate due to internal abrasions. Performing this maintenance once a year will keep your line soft and flexible, reducing the possibility of snags when running through the windlass. Soap and other oxygenated cleaners can be used in place of fabric softener, but bleach should never be used as it will actually degrade the line even further. [links]

Scenario: Upon anchor retrieval, the anchor rode jams in the windlass on its way to the locker and must be manually helped into place at the bottom of the locker.

Solution: Since it's difficult to prevent the boat from spinning once at anchor, this issue is most easily fixed by adding an anchor turner kit to your boat. An anchor turner kit includes a swivel that automatically twists your anchor as it is pulled to the bow roller. This tool ensures that your anchor is always oriented the correct way and eliminates the need to manually flip the anchor by hand. [links]

Never anchor from the stern as this can cause the boat to swamp. The square stern may be hit by waves, and water will splash into the boat. The motor’s weight will add to this problem. Slowly back the boat away downwind or downcurrent. more

In most cases, “yes”, it has to touch bottom. Remember the primary purpose of the sea anchor is to hold the boat or ship “in place” against sea currents and/or weather. more

Finally, How do you Unanchor a boat?,

First, pull up on the anchor line so you’re directly above the anchor. “Tail off” the anchor line on a bow cleat, taking a turn around the base and holding taut. Don’t cleat it off in case you need to release the line quickly as the boat dips into a trough – and watch your fingers if it’s rough. [links]

The replacement windlass has been shipped out but I don't think the problem was with the windlass to begin with. here

What is happening is that there is no place for the rope to go and so it sits there in the gypsy as it turns and it rubs on the line fraying it. Also this is what most likely cause the jam that sheared the screws and bent your stripper.

Third, if you have the photos you mentioned in your original email I would like to see them and if you could get me the serial number for the windlass, it would start us on a trail to find out the history of the windlass here. more

I have since learned to operate the windlass much more cautiously.
