In 1884, Jan Jans Huisman founded the Huisman Shipyard, which continues to be family-owned and operated to this day. In the early years, luxury yacht builder Huisman produced smaller wooden motor and sailing yachts. The shipyard began building in steel in 1954, and also pioneered aluminium yacht construction. In 1959, Jan Huisman’s son Wolter Huisman took over as the head of luxury yacht builder Huisman, steering the shipyard into successful racing sailing yacht production and eventually entering the custom superyacht market. During and shortly after World War II, the pleasure yachting industry was in dire straits. In the wake of the devastation the war wreaked, Europeans simply did not have the money or the will to order luxury seafaring vessels. In response to this, the Dutch government introduced export incentives, and this led the company to implement plans to sell luxury yachts to clients in the United States. This was the start of Feadship (First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders), which was founded in 1949 at the behest of the naval architect Henri De Voogt.
