From the boxes of information collected over the years, I will be helping to update the Islero section of the Lamborghini Registry produced by Glen Kohut. This is an excellent site for comprehensive Lamborghini information. I highly recommend it. Also the Yahoo groups are extremely helpful: LamborghiniList, Classic_Lambo, and VintageLambo. These groups are a wonderful forum and means to ask tech questions and find all sorts of other information necessary. Also the archives of David Hanley, storing useful Lamborghini information from past Lamborghini web sites and tech discussions is extremely valuable.

Shown here are distributor caps for the Islero V-12. Take good care of them as they are expensive! The one on the left is a reproduction, the one on the right is exact original from Marelli. Both are available through GT Car Parts. The cap on the left costs under $200 and is identical to the original on the right except in a few minor cosmetic details. The original costs about $500 more. here

Durability of the auto rustproofing that you use is crucial to the effectiveness. If it is not weatherproof, chip and scratch resistant, it will not be very durable considering that its applied on the underbody of the car.

POR 15 stands for “Paint Over Rust” and it’s one of the strongest rust prevention paints you can buy. The brand also states that you don’t even need to remove rust prior to applying the formula but we recommend that you do for the best results.

Another benefit of using this formula is that it provides sound deadening qualities, which can make a big difference for certain vehicles. more

Whether you own a classic car or a beater car, rust can be a big problem. The underbody of your car is where the majority of the rust will occur and you can have cars that look pristine bodywork wise but can have holes in the floor. here

From a classic car point of view, you will want to ensure that everything is protected in order to increase the resale value. Those that drive beater/average day cars will want to ensure rust doesn’t spread and that they can keep the car on the road for as long as possible and pass inspections. here

A. Anything steel that is treated with ANY product containing phosphoric acid MUST be neutralized before any primer or paint can be applied. If the dried phosphoric acid is left on the surface any coating will fail unless it is a self etching primer because these primers have phosphoric acid in them but then you need to put a special sealer over that before any coating will adhere. Ask anyone in the automotive refinish business (Body shop) if you can remove rust with phosphoric acid and then prime directly over it. Tech sheets for automotive primers tell you they cannot be applied over an acid etched surface and auto epoxy primers are some of the toughest products out there to adhere to and seal metal. more

Proper surface prep is essential for spray paint adhesion, so sand or brush off all loose paint and rust spots. Because shiny objects seldom allow paint to bond well, use the metal brush and sandpaper to lightly scour and dull the surface till it looks lightly scratched, almost like brushed nickel. A very lightly scoured surface will help paint bond; don’t be overly zealous or you’ll get gouges or scratches.

Prepare your work location, which ideally will be outdoors and protected from wind. Not only can wind blow leaves and pollen onto your project, it can literally push your paint around, causing uneven results. If working indoors, ventilate the area well, opening doors and windows. Move all furniture from the area or cover with drop cloths, and also protect floors with drop cloths or newspaper for as much as 10 feet around your work zone for large projects. Using masking tape, tape off areas of your piece that you want to keep unpainted. more

If your paint doesn’t include primer, follow the painting techniques in Step 6 with a spray primer formulated for use on metal, such as Rust-Oleum Metal Primer Spray Paint (view on Amazon). Allow it to dry thoroughly before repeating Step 6 for your first color coat. [links]
