Dewey was an Army brat — his father was a colonel — and lived wherever there was a military post. When he was a teenager, the family lived in Marin and Dewey dreamed of being a lighthouse keeper, a romantic job, he thought, solitary one, too, where he could read books and write poetry. [links]
Professor Colin Dewey still does occasional deckhand jobs on breaks from the California State University Maritime Academy in Vallejo.
So he joined the Coast Guard, just about the time lighthouses were automated. No more keepers. Instead he got duty on a cutter on fish patrol in Alaska. “I hated it,” he said. “Too military.” But he loved the sea, loved steering ships, liked the work later on a buoy tender sailing in and out of small ports.
He was working on a ship tied up in Oakland not long ago when a former student, a newly minted engineering officer, came up the gangway to come aboard. “Professor Dewey!” he said, amazed. “What are you doing here?” “Deck work,” Dewey replied. “And don’t forget. On this ship, you outrank me.” more
Colin Dewey, a professor at the California State University Maritime Academy in Vallejo, is one of a kind.
He has doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degrees, and also a limited master’s license, a mate’s license and an unlimited certificate as an able-bodied seaman. He is a member of various academic societies — and the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific. He spent 32 years at sea in the Coast Guard and the merchant marine and still does occasional casual deckhand jobs on breaks from his role as chair of Cal Maritime’s department of culture and communication.
