If everyone who uses our weather forecasts helps us out just a little bit, our future would be much more secure.

PassageWeather's forecasts take a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our forecasts matter.

More people are using PassageWeather than ever, but advertising revenues across the web are falling fast. And unlike many other websites, we haven't put up a paywall - we want to keep our website as open and free as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. [links]

Our sailing weather forecasts are derived using data from the most trusted and reliable weather models available. These models include the GFS and WaveWatch III models, the same weather models that produce the GRIB files used by modern electronic navigation software and weather routing software.

But not all catamarans behave like high-performance cruising catamarans. Therefore, you need to have a deep understanding of how your boat operates before you set off into the open sea. This is only accomplished through spending time on the water. [links]

Because catamarans rely on the buoyancy from their twin narrow hulls (instead of one wide hull on a monohull), they can handle a shallow draft without hampering either their stability or maneuverability. Cats also spread their weight equally between the twin hulls, which allows them to sit much higher on the water. more

And since these catamarans are light in weight and contain ample sail plans, you need to pay special attention to your sail choice to maintain safety in all weather conditions. [links]

On top of this, it might be important that the hull be strong enough to take impacts with other objects while on the water. A yacht might not be out to sea when experiencing rough weather, so it’s important that its hull can take hits from debris and shallow areas without falling apart.

As long as your yacht can travel at this speed, you should be able to outrun it. This is especially true if you’ve been watching the weather reports, as you’ll have plenty of time to get a head start on the hurricane. here

A yacht owner will want to make sure that their rudder is in good condition before heading out into bad weather. This can be done by making sure it does not have any corrosion, cracks, or pits in it.

The first night you find yourself wedging your bags around your body to keep you in the bunk while you try to sleep, you will realize life aboard ship in foul weather is tough. And it becomes even tougher when the darkness sets in and you are trying to preserve night vision so the on duty crew can keep the boat upright while the winds and waves batter them on deck. more

When we put in, and because most of the trip was hot and boring and now a motor was dead, most of my crew decided to fly home and that left me and my buddy Jay to take this boat the rest of the way back to North Carolina, on one motor. here

And that’s it. Know what you know and don’t do things that you don’t know. If you have never sailed in 30 knots of wind, don't start sailing in 50 knots. Read the forecast and sail to your experience level and to the readiness level of your boat.

A darkened ship is a different world and to be safe at night especially when it is rough weather requires that everyone respect each other's night vision while underway. A good headlamp with lots of back up power will make your life so much better that you’ll want to go sailing sometime soon again, even if you step off the boat after this storm and say” I’m never doing this ever again.” more
