Legend has it this 15th-century vase was given to a bride on the eve of her wedding in Naples, Italy, but she was murdered that night holding the artifact. After her death, any family member it passed to also died. The family stored the vase, but it resurfaced in 1988 with a note warning of its capabilities. Even so, the vase was auctioned off for $2,250 without the note. The pharmacist who bought it died shortly after as did various others who owned it until, finally, a family demanded that the police do away with it completely.

Deer Woman is an animal spirit that appears throughout Native American art and mythology. She is sometimes depicted in animal form, sometimes human form, and sometimes both. Deer Woman is associated with love and fertility, but in contemporary tellings she takes on a mischievous role. The spirit is known to seduce promiscuous men and leave them to die or waste away from longing.

Maria felt immediate remorse and threw herself into the river in an attempt to reverse her sins. Instead of finding forgiveness, she is cursed to walk riverbanks for eternity, where she kidnaps and drowns other children out of spite. It is said that if you hear her cry, you will soon encounter the same fate. La Llorona has been represented in many forms of Mexican art throughout the years including film, poetry, theater, and literature. [links]

One of Mexico’s most popular tales centers around La Llorona, which translates to “weeping woman.” Though no one is certain from where the story originated, it has been haunting Mexican families since well before the Spanish conquest. Details vary from source to source, but the general idea is that La Llorona started out as a beautiful woman named Maria. After her husband left her (some versions say for a younger woman), she drowned her children in a river out of rage.

Soon, someone grows suspicious and spies on them, horrified to discover that Otsuyu is a skeleton. Though petrified, the samurai’s love for Otsuyu is so strong that he ignores warnings to stay away and follows her to a grave in a temple. The next day, his dead body is found entwined with the woman’s skeleton. This famous folktale has been the subject of many Japanese paintings and was also developed into a Kabuki play. more

There are many stories in folklore surrounding headless horsemen—from the German folktale by the Brothers Grimm to the Irish Celtic legend of dullahan, a headless demon on a black horse. The most persistent American version of the myth is a loose adaptation of Washington Irving’s 1820 story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which draws from historical facts about the American Revolutionary War.

“I used to work for a hazardous materials company that went to different facilities to pack chemicals and dispose of them. anyways, we got a call to clean up some chemicals from a mental hospital in orange county ca, near Diamond Bar. The hospital has shutdown but they still use parts of it for helping the blind, which is still pretty freaky pulling up to the place and seeing people walk in a single file line holding each other’s shoulders because they couldn’t see the outside world. When the police investigated, they found a short-range transmitter connected to several cameras hidden throughout their home. The light fixture in the shower, the ceiling fan above their bed, even a pinhole in the nursery were sending videos to a nearby location.

There are plenty of terrifying monsters in Japanese folklore, one of which being Kuchisake-Onna, the Slit-Mouthed Woman. Kuchisake-Onna is the ghost of a woman who was wounded by her envious husband. Often wearing a surgical mask, she approaches travelers (usually children) and asks them if they think she is beautiful. If the victim says yes, she pulls off her mask and mutilates his face to look like hers. If the person says no, she dispatches her victim with a pair of scissors. Stories of this murderous yokai originated in the Edo period, but sightings occurred in the late 1970s. here

A list of scary tales is never complete without a ghost story. Mexico has La Llorona (la yo-RRO-na), the Weeping Woman. La Llorona is believed to be the ghost of a mother who drowned her offspring. To this day, she haunts rivers and creeks, searching and crying for her missing children. Parents mention La Llorona to keep their children in line. Some say this ghost steals kids who go out after dark and drowns them. If you take a walk down the river, keep an ear out for wailing. more

American folklore is steeped with scary tales, and few are as spooky as the the Maryland Goatman. According to urban legend, this menacing creature was a scientist carrying out an experiment involving goats. Unfortunately, there was a side effect. Goatman is often blamed for killing dogs, but he is especially notorious for attacking and preying on young couples in cars. His weapon of choice is an ax, which he uses to slash tires and dispatch his prey. Keep your eyes peeled when going out for a drive, because if you don’t, you’re in for a rough night.

People around the world tell stories of mysterious animals, from North America’s Bigfoot and Tibet’s Yeti to Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster and Australia’s Yowie. Tanzania has the Mngwa (MING-wa), a monstrous giant cat capable of killing its victims at the drop of a hat. Since the early 20th Century, there have been plenty of attacks from this stealthy creature. But so far, no one has succeeded in hunting or catching this feline beast. Grey tabby cat-like fur gives away the Mngwa’s presence, but it’s as elusive as it is deadly. more

Legend of the Bean Sucker, the story of a man who wanted to scare a couple as they were coming home in a carriage, back in the late 1800’s. He stuffed his mouth full of beans and jumped in front of their carriage. It was said the driver was angry, so he chased the man down the railroad tracks by the path, until the man (the bean guy) ran into an oncoming train. It was said when they found the body, there was no head. Since then, people say you can hear the Bean Sucker’s head rolling around or find beans on the ground [links]

“Black Shucks; big, black, ghostly/demonic dogs with glowing red eyes that are supposed to be omens of death. They generally appear on roads at night. There’s apparently a few around town and some drag chains too. Also one is actually a bear, but I have no idea why we have a ghostly demonic bear because we don’t even have normal bears in this country.” — Numerous_Emus more

After the colonel died, a tomb was erected for him, but overnight a leg-shaped stain appeared right of the face of it. People tried to remove the stain, but it wouldn’t go away. Eventually, they just replaced the stone on the tomb entirely… only for a new, identical stain to appear in the exact same spot on the new stone. more
