My power steering has been malfunctioning and would go empty in a few days since I bought my 1998 Toyota Camry. Now when I add more fluid to my empty reservoir, it empties completely again in less than a minute. Before I filled the reservoir, I raised the front end and tire to reveal the pump. And after pouring the fluid I noticed the pump it self rapidly leaking all the fluid I just poured. It was leaking in the area where the pump was connected to the belt-wheel. Am I able to remove the pump completely and drive safely without power steering and not damaging anything else on the car?

Power steering affects every aspect of handling, whether it’s turns and curves or just staying on the straight and narrow. Power steering fluid is as vital to safe driving as oil is to continued engine prowess. Without this vital fluid, your power steering will fail. If you have a power steering leak, you may not be able to turn the car with the force needed. This can lead to unsafe driving situations and, worse, preventable crashes. If you detect a power steering leak, this is definitely a problem. If you act quickly, it may have an inexpensive solution.

Working under stress, the pump will break from lack of proper fluid intake. A damaged power steering pump costs hundreds to repair. In worst case scenarios, a power steering fluid leak may damage the power steering rack. If this happens, repairs could cost well over $1,000. Clearly, these break-downs are worth avoiding, but can you? Actually, there is an effective product called No Leak®, which costs less than $10 per bottle. No Leak’s Power Steering Stop Leak can be used to seal current leaks and prevent future ones. No Leak is safe and compatible with all power steering fluids. here

When working properly, with no leaks, the fluid is pressured by the pump. This pressured fluid then helps turn the wheels by pushing on pistons mounted to the rack. If fluid is leaking from any point along the intricate machinery, the fluid will lose its effectiveness. If the power steering leak is significant, there won’t be enough fluid to pressurize, leading to difficulty in steering. here

Here’s the thing--power steering fluid is what gives you power. The pump pumps it, sends the power to the rack, which makes it easy to turn. If it all leaked out and you drive it, it will burn the power steering pump out, because it will run on air. Now, you can take the belt of, of the power steering belt, and you have no power steering. If you do that, the rack will last forever. It doesn’t hurt the rack--the rack just gets the power assist. If you don’t have it, it will still work perfectly fine. It won’t hurt anything but you’ve got to disconnect the pump, because the pump will burn itself out. It runs on air when the fluid gets down the knob. If you would like to have this checked, a certified technician from YourMechanic can locate your power steering fluid leak and make the repairs needed to get you back driving on the road safely.

2004 Proton Saga. Recently, rack power steering all leaked out--the damage is turning rack and there is no power steering.

From there you can figure out what needs to be done or replaced. Power steering systems have so much pressure which makes it pretty easy to find out where they are leaking from. However, if you need assistance with this feel free to contact a certified mechanic who can find the source of the power steering leak and fix it accordingly.

I have a '95 Dodge Ram 2500. I've noticed that my power steering fluid is leaking. I don't know where it is coming from. I think it's a cooling line. Are ther any quick fixes? I live two block from Autozone. [links]

You’ve got to find where the leak is coming from. Power steering pumps put out 1500 PSI or more at times. So, wherever the leak is, you are going to see it squirting out.
