Seadoo gti rfi has no spark
See full version: 2004 SeaDoo GTI LE RFI problems
As I was checking for spark, I found out something weird. When attempting to crank, push start button and no spark when engine is turning over. Try again within a couple of seconds, and I get spark. The spark goes away on that cylinder once engine is running, poorly I might add. It will idle but cyl. 1 is not firing (pulled wire off while running and no change). more
I bought this ski just a couple of weeks ago and don't know much of its history. It does have a replacement engine with only 61 hours on it. here
My 2004 GTI LE RFI died on the water Monday. It was difficult to start at first but ran fine for 10 minutes or so. Then after changing riders, no start. Ran the battery dead trying to start and had to be towed in. So SAD!

I have good compression on both cyls., 150 psi, fuel pressure is 55 psi, but the spark on cylinder one is intermittent. The engine will barely start and idles rough.

Am I looking at replacing the coil pack?

I checked the crank sensor and it had only a few metal filings on it. Cleaned it off and reinstalled. I also cleaned the RAVE valves. One was completely stuck. Both had the red cap screwed all the way down. I also trimmed 1/4 inch off the offending wire and reinstalled. Put in new plugs and restarted. Not much improvement.

You need to know that the coil has an internal CDI built into it, so not only does the coil need to work, but the CDI must work before the coil is energized. It is rare that I see bad coils or cdi's, but anything is possible. [links]

There is the possibility that you have some metal shavings that are shorting out the system. If this is the case you may be able to clean them off and it will work. I would order replacement parts anyways.
Bill, Thanks for the email (cut/pasted here). I have a Rotax 717 2 stroke single carb engine in this ski.

Some models use an MPEM with an internal rectifier/regulator and others use a seperate rectifier/regulator module. I hate it when the MPEM has an internal rec/reg as the book calls for a whole new mpem when the rec/reg fails. Expensive ! The seperate modules are not too expensive, and it takes about 15 minutes to change out. [links]
You have power going into and out of the starter relay to crank over the engine. That indicates the ground must be good on the engine. more

How much do you want for your mpem?

Another thing I tried was shorting / jumping the starter relay in the rear electrical box. This caused the engine to turn over, though it wouldn't catch. Also, I checked all the fuses in the MPEM module and they were all okay. I checked the only fuse I could find in the rear electrical box and it was also okay. [links]

I tried the advanced self-diagnostic test and heres what happened: After five presses of the start button, there was a short beep followed by a long beep. Then, one of three things would happen:

I have a 2000 Sea-Doo RX that I was hoping you could help me with. After not using it for a year, the battery died and wouldnt hold charge. I replaced it with a new battery, charged it, and went to start up the jetski. However, when I put the lanyard key onto the little knob / post, the Sea-Doo did not give the usual two beeps (though the instrument LCD display did turn on to show the time). When I pressed the red start/stop starter button, nothing happened. Even after cleaning off the contacts inside my two keys, I couldnt get the Sea-Doo to beep when either of the keys are attached.

To me it seems like the Sea-Doo forget the keys when its battery was dead for over a few months, and that it no longer recognizes their codes. The service rep at my local dealership told me over the phone that my starter relay is probably broken but I dont agree with him because theres a more fundamental problem here I think. [links]

1. Without putting the lanyard on, I press the start button: the ski beeps twice
2. I put on the lanyard, and then press the start button: the ski beeps twice (same as pressing the start button without putting on the lanyard)
3. Sometimes though, after I put on the lanyard and then press the start button, the ski beeps three times more

What do these results mean?
I also have aftermarket mpems available for select older models. Check here for info on that. [links]

If you are wondering what MPEM is in your PWC or Jetboat, look below to find the answer!

I additionally offer a programming service for DESS equipped boats. If desired, you can send your old MPEM and DESS Lanyard to me so I can verify that you aren't trying to get a stolen boat running. I'll then program your lanyard to a new/used MPEM you've purchased from me. That way you're ready to go once you get the replacement part. I also stock Lanyards if you need an extra as well (up to 8 can be stored in the MPEM). I additionally can install the replacement MPEM in your electrical box if desired as well. If interested in any of these services, e-mail me and I'll send you a quote for what you want to do.

Also, I'm in the process of making conversions so you can use a PWC mpem/electrical box in the various Rotax powered boats. This will allow for cheaper repair of the boats defective mpems as well as to separate the boats electrical system on twin engine models so you can get back home on one in case of an mpem failure. So far I have conversions available for 1996 Challenger and 1996/1997 Speedster. The only drawback to the conversion is the elimination of the neutral rev limiting features built into the boat mpems. As long as the operator is careful, that shouldn't be a problem. If you're interested in a conversion for a particular Rotax powered boat model, let me know and I'll see if I can put together a system for you. [links]

One more note I don't have a parts book for the newer Jetboats that use the mercury motor, so if you need an MPEM for one of those, I would have to call my supplier for the part number and availability. more
