While most people focus on crossing the Atlantic from Europe to the Caribbean, the voyage back to Europe or the US east coast is equally important – in some ways more so. The road home can be more testing, but it is also varied, and planning for it should ideally shape your preparations from the time you plan to leave home for a season in the sun. What should you weigh up in your crew and boat preparations and which route and strategy is best?
For decades, the late Herb Hilgenberg provided free weather services to eastbound yachtsmen, and when I interviewed him a few years ago he also advised an even more cautious route: here
“The average time people spend here is four to five days. If you have to wait for spares that will be six to ten days, depending on the supplier at the other end, it will delay you, and the cost of transport [air freight], for, say, a pump can be €60-80 per leg for the two legs.” more
Despite continuing waves of the COVID-19 virus in Italy and Europe, both cruise lines were able to start the ships sailing on itineraries from Italy following precautions similar to those they had used on their prior cruise programs. Costa operated one ship in the fall of 2020 but did not resume sailing after a hiatus between Christmas and New Year’s. MSC had resumed service with one cruise ship, the MSC Grandiosa in 2020 and is working to expand operations into the summer of 2021.

As the first step to restring cruise operations for the summer of 2021 in the Mediterranean, two large ships returned to service on May 1 sailing from Italy. Carnival Corporation’s Costa Cruises returned to service for the first time in 2021, while MSC Cruises started sailing a second large cruise ship.

An Oceania Cruises voyage of 85 days on the line's premium 684-passenger Sirena begins and ends in Miami, Florida. The itinerary takes passengers on an extended Mediterranean tour encompassing ports in Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Greece, Cyprus and Israel. Among the fabled harbors where Sirena drops anchor are Saint Tropez, France, and Positano, Portofino, Sorrento and Taormina in Italy. Longer stays are featured in Venice, Italy, as well as in Seville, Spain; Florence, Italy; and Jerusalem. The voyage also cruises to ports in Albania, Montenegro and Croatia along the Adriatic Sea, the Mediterranean's northernmost arm. A generous guest-to-staff ratio of 1.7 to 1 ensures plenty of personal onboard service onboard. Gourmands will find popular international options like Italian cuisine at Tuscan Steak, French food at Jacques Bistro and Asian fare at Red Ginger. For days at sea, the signature Canyon Ranch SpaClub and private Spa Terrace provide state-of-the-art fitness and relaxation options. Guests also enjoy a library, expert lectures by a historian, naturalist or former ambassador, and a pool deck with a putting green. Diversions during the evenings cruising at sea include nightly headliner entertainment, live musical performances, dancing at Horizons, lounges and a Monte Carlo-style casino. more
Travel in and out of Fort Lauderdale on MS Amsterdam's 113-day voyage. This round-the-world cruise with a guest capacity of 1,380 makes Mediterranean ports of call at Naples, Italy; Barcelona and Cadiz in Spain; and Lisbon and Leixoes in Portugal. Holland America Line exclusively presents BBC Earth Experiences, a documentary partnership designed to present miracles of the natural world via interactive experiences, trivia challenges and live concerts. The Digital Workshop and America's Test Kitchen provide more hands-on learning opportunities for guests. Physical activities include a fully equipped fitness center offering classes in yoga, pilates and cycling, plus two outdoor pools, basketball and volleyball courts. After working up a sweat, unwind in the Greenhouse Spa & Salon. The signature As You Wish concept allows flexibility in dining choices. Opt for an upscale supper with wine pairings at Pinnacle Grill, a five-course dinner at La Fontaine, casual meals at the Lido Pool or 24-hour room service.
Princess Cruises operates a 111-day round-trip world voyage departing from either Los Angeles or Fort Lauderdale. A total of 44 ports of call touch five continents and include a good dose of Mediterranean destinations. Highlights among these visits include the ever-popular Santorini island in Greece and two days each in Barcelona, Spain, and in Venice. There are also calls in Mediterranean Sea ports in Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, Malta, France and elsewhere along the Spanish and Italian coastlines. Refurbished in summer 2017, Pacific Princess is a relatively small vessel accommodating 670 guests plus 375 crew to deliver an intimate atmosphere, yet offering plenty of personal space for such a long cruise. In addition to three lounges, there are six dining venues, including two specialty restaurants and three casual ones, plus the main dining room. Wine tasting, expert lectures by Discovery at Sea and evening entertainment is pitched at adults; there's no youth programming on this voyage. During so many days at sea, passengers can expect staff to know their name and personal preferences aboard this handsome ship with dark wood interiors reminiscent of a stately manor house. [links]
When there's time to spare and a preference for sailing over flying, look into an extended Mediterranean cruise departing from America. It's a rarity because nearly all Mediterranean cruises from the U.S. are only one-way voyages. Most round-trip Mediterranean cruises begin and end in Europe, but a few U.S. sailings include Mediterranean ports as they sail to other regions around the world. These cruises sometimes cross the Atlantic twice or continue around the world to accommodate a far-flung leisurely journey. Sailings change from year to year, so passengers are advised to check details with cruise lines and travel agents. Considering the scarcity of Mediterranean round-trip voyages from the U.S., passengers wishing to avoid flying may choose to pair a couple of one-way cruises from a convenient U.S. departure city. more
