The most common option for people who are moving a boat is to trailer the vessel to their home, into storage or to the water. Many boaters purchase a trailer with their boat in order to ensure that they can always get the boat where they need it to go. If you happen to live near the water or don’t need a trailer on a regular basis, you may be able to hold off on buying a trailer one until it’s absolutely necessary.

Factors include the height, width and weight of the vessel and the necessary equipment and services for safely transporting it. Roughly between $1-$3 per mile could be considered the average cost of boat transport under 1,000 miles, but for greater distances and more complex requirements, the cost could easily exceed $5 per mile.

Make sure that all of your accessories and gear, as well as any windows, doors, and hatches on your boat are secure prior to transport. This will ensure that you avoid any damage in transit, no matter how you are moving your vessel. [links]

There are a few different repositioning cruises that cross the Atlantic from the United States to Europe, most operated by Cunard. These journeys go from New York or Fort Lauderdale to Southampton, UK, and the cost varies, depending on the time of year and length of journey. For example, an 18-day transatlantic repositioning cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Southampton in July of 2019 is going for $3,100 per person, while a 14-day cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Southampton in March of 2018 is going for $1,300 per person. here

Most major cruise companies offer low-season repositioning cruises, which take place when a cruise ship travels from one major port to another in the off-season. These trips tend to cost less than typical cruises, but still offer most of the usual cruise amenities. here

Registration of a vessel is not compulsory for a UK Citizen who keeps their boat in the UK, but it is essential if you wish to take your boat outside UK Territorial Waters. This applies both to boats which are sailed or driven to a foreign port and to dinghies, ribs, sports boats and PWC etc. which are trailered to other countries. You should always be prepared to present the original registration document - photocopies are often not acceptable. This is known to be the case in France (RYA members can read more).

This is not necessarily the case when in the territorial or internal waters of another country. The requirements vary from country to country so you should establish what is required in advance. It is advisable to carry any certificates you hold (just in case) even if they are not a formal requirement. The International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) is increasingly the certificate that is requested whilst cruising abroad. For further information see Evidence of Competence Abroad. [links]
