Located 84 km northwest of the bustling crowds of Phuket, these nine uninhabited tropical islands are renowned for their pure white coral beaches, huge granite boulders, colourful coral reefs and incredibly diverse marine life making this archipelago one of the most popular dive locations in the world. "Similan" is derived from the Malay sembilan, and means "nine", and each of the Similan Islands has a number as well as a name. The islands are home to crab-eating monkeys, dusky langurs, squirrels, bats, lizards and a good variety of birds. Swim with turtles and marvel at the spectacular underwater beauty, take a romantic stroll along a deserted beach or relax and soak up the natural beauty of this destination. more

Other Similan residents include Hairy-Legged Crabs, Mangrove Monitor Lizards and many more amazing species

The famous Richelieu Rock, is one of the only sites in the world where whale sharks are encountered regularly. This limestone pinnacle is carpeted with a thick covering pink and purple coral. Richelieu is a wall around a main outcrop, which is surrounded by smaller pinnacles whose peaks range in height from 3m to 10m below the surface.

One of the best diivbing sites in the Surin Islands, Thailand is Ao Phakkat. Angelfish is often found and there is no less than seven species. The area has a rich diversity of corals, especially foliose corals. The rocks in the shallower waters are home to hermit crabs, urchins and cleaner shrimps, and are rich with colourful featherstars. This is one of the few locations in Thai waters where large numbers of bumphead parrotfish are still frequently seen.

Christmas point is one of the most dramatic sites in the Similan island group. Christmas Point is a dive site with impressive, weird and unique topography, dominated by the enormous granite boulders, arches and swim-through that make diving here unlike anywhere else in the World. Using the walls as substrate, huge sea fans and soft corals thrive and act as the backdrop to the passing sealife such as jacks, sharks and fusiliers. here

The entire Surin archepelago covers a region greater than 320 km and includes the picturesque island of Koh Tachai and sublime scuba diving at Richelieu Rock where the large pelagic favourites, Manta Rays and Whale Sharks, are often sighted. Visit a traditional village of Moken – sea gypsies that live on Koh Surin Tai – who derive everything they need from the sea. Look out for their kabang traditional boats crafted from a single piece of wood from which they live and work. [links]
