Some lead acid batteries including AGM and Gel batteries have a natural swelling. So, due to the way that they are built by enabling the absorption of gases that are produced during the chemical procedure inside the battery. These types of batteries are tightly packed and when the cells plates increase in any way then the battery case takes the added pressure. Of course, this is described as “recombinant”. So in this type of battery then slight swelling can be a common feature with little consequences. However, overcharging the battery could be another matter. Overcharging can be dangerous and make the battery casing swell way out of proportion. Of course then overcharging should be well avoided.

In my opinion then the car battery bulging can be for a couple of reasons ! firstly, your cars battery can freeze in very cold weather. Especially, when the battery is old and perhaps near the end of its life. So, with constant topping up of the battery with distilled water, then you will get weaker acid strength. Resulting in the car battery becoming less able to cope with any very cold weather that may come our way.

So in recently we have had a couple of problems with our customers experiencing swollen batteries. Of course, this is not very common and the battery has bulging sides. First thing to remember is that this is a thing that we dont often see. Most of the car batteries that go out to our online customers work perfectly fine. Naturally, we never usually hear from them again.

I never heard any noises from it or any liquid bubbling out of the vents at all.
its very minor bulging. one side is more than the other here

my 100AH battery seems to be fine other than the slight bulging.
I looked at the reviews for my battery model on amazon where I got it from and half of the reviews (recent ones) say its died after a few months. died immediately. dead on arrival. leaked. bulged severely. with pictures of it. or some other problem.
but overall/average ratings is 75% 5 stars out of 5 stars.

battery says cycle charge 14.6v to 14.8v
float charge 13.2v to 13.8v

voltage holds fine too. 12.83v after sitting for a month without a charge.
and fresh off the charger its just over 13.2 after sitting for a few minutes. here

is my battery somehow defective?

Practice safe sniff testing! Never stick a dangerous substance near your face and inhale deeply—rather, waft the area near your battery. You may notice a sweet, metallic chemical smell which could be battery gas escaping a swollen battery. more

As batteries swell, they expand and push other components out of the way. Oftentimes a display, button, or trackpad will be pushed out of normal alignment. You may have a swollen battery if your phone case doesn’t fit as well as it used to, or there’s a new gap between components, or buttons have become stiff or hard to push, or your device has more give than usual and feels “squishy.” more

In the event that the battery does begin to combust or leak, you need to have a safe place to store it. Work on a non-flammable surface and outside if it’s cool and dry. Prepare a fireproof container, such as a sealed metal can, metal bucket of sand, or equivalent. If water is your only option, ''use a lot''. If you work indoors, have a clear path to a place outside where the battery reaction may safely run itself out. [links]

Once the battery has been removed, it needs to be safely disposed of. Do not throw batteries into trash or recycling bins. Do not put/store the battery in water. If the battery is warm, smelly or smoking, put it outside away from flammable materials, or in a fireproof container, and wait for the symptoms to dissipate. When safe, take the battery to a local e-waste collection site; refer to our e-waste page to find one in your area. Do not mail the battery to an e-waste processing facility—there are strict regulations against this as the battery could cause damage in transit. [links]

In the normal charging range, this bubbling is caused when an electric current from your charger is passing between the positive and negative plates in the battery’s cells and through the electrolyte solution. This results in electrolysis which excites the electrolyte solution and releases hydrogen and oxygen gas from the “water” (evaporation).

While your battery is charging or experiencing a controlled overcharge you want to make sure that you are still in the “most cases” category. Touch your battery and make sure that it is not getting hot. [links]

To keep it simple, if the battery sounds like a carbonated beverage when charging, then I’m not at all worried (assuming it’s hooked to a quality smart charger with a float mode).

Sealed lead acid batteries – both AGM and gelled electrolyte can swell up and expand sometimes. This happens due to the construction of lead acid batteries which is referred to as “recombinant”. They are constructed in such a way to allow absorption of gasses released during the chemical process inside the battery.

Overcharging or short-circuiting of the battery is the only reason for swelling up of the lead acid battery. The problem is not inherent in the battery itself. In order to avoid swelling up of the battery you need to tackle the underlying cause of the problem. [links]
