Ever ran into the headache of an oil pan gasket that doesn’t quite fit your timing cover? Well, like every problem, we have a solution; or a tip rather, that will save you the extra run to the parts house. On a small block Chevy engine, some oil pan gaskets are a bit thicker than others (about 1/8-inch) and this can cause a problem where the gasket seals inside the timing cover grove. Some timing covers (like Speedway's 910-11040) have a thin grove, and others are thick. Fel-pro specifies a thick gasket at 3/8-inch, and a thin gasket at 1/4-inch. The images below compare the problem found between a thick and thin gasket.

Photo A: In this photo we installed Speedway’s billet timing cover onto a small block Chevy 350, which is intended for a thin-style oil pan gasket. Notice the width of the groove where the oil pan gasket should seat inside of.

Photo D: In this photo we installed Fel-pro’s premium three-piece gasket that is intended for a thin-style timing cover. You can see how the front seal fits down inside the timing cover grove perfectly. [links]

Hello;
Had leakey cars and had a Pro do the job! Replaced boath pans on boath cars and used the new 1 piece gaskets and what looks like a bunch of sealer! Also had the valve covers and intake bolts sealed too. So far, absolutely no leaks on my 57 (which I abuse every day) and only a slight trans leak on my 32 Hot Rod caused by a cracked trans case!
It cost some money but I am a happy camper and my driveway likes it too!

I think I fixed it by cleaning the area with lacquer thinner and then smearing some silicon sealant on the front of the recessed rubber seal between timing cover and pan. Will test it tomorrow. here

I always thought Chevy should have dropped the pan rails down below the main caps like the old Ford Y-blocks. Guess it was all about the weight, though. Stamped steel is lighter than cast iron. here

Same hole you screw in a long bolt to hold the fuel pump push rod in place while changing out fuel pumps. And it definitely has to be a short bolt. more

Oil leaks can be difficult to track down the exact location of the leak. They also can vary widely in repair costs from less than $100 to over $1000. Also if you aren’t seeing drips on the ground do you really need to fix it?

If you do end up having a timing cover oil leak, the good news is it’s probably not that severe. Since the timing cover is just a cover, there isn’t any pressurized oil behind it so leaks are often relatively slow meaning if you absolutely need to, you can keep driving with this leak as long as you keep an eye on your oil level. The real danger of driving with a timing cover oil leak, besides a low oil level, is getting engine oil on your engine belt. The oil will degrade your engine belt quickly and can allow it to slip on the pulleys it drives which causes a new set of problems and can leave you stranded and damage your engine. If you’ve got an oily engine belt, fix your timing cover oil leak ASAP! here

The only two options for fixing a timing cover oil leak is to restore the gasket or replace the gasket. BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak can restore your timing cover gasket or front crank seal stopping your oil leak if repacing the gasket doesn’t make sense if your vehicle. [links]
