Rustoleum is known for being an excellent rust-preventive paint. Although available in spray cans, when spraying large surfaces, it is more cost effective to purchase larger sizes, such as quarts or gallons, and spray the paint using an HVLP spray gun. These larger containers do not contain sprayable Rustoleum. In order to use them with a spray gun, the Rustoleum must first be thinned using the correct solvent so it can be sprayed.

Place the paint cup on a flat, level surface where you can easily see the mixture ratios marked on the side of the cup. The correct mixing ratio for paint to thinner is 50/50, but you must carefully determine for yourself when the proper consistency has been reached.

Open the paint reservoir cap of the HVLP spray gun and pour the paint mix in. Reseal the cap, and then adjust the pressure of the spray gun to 20 pounds per square inch. here

Both topside and bottom boat paint can be applied to fiberglass, metal and wood. First, clean the area where you’ll be painting using a soft cloth and mineral spirits as needed, then let dry. Use a brush or sponge to apply the paint.

You can use oil or latex paint for exterior decks. Oil-based paints typically last longer and provide better protection against moisture, but they’re very shiny and don’t withstand high heat over time. Latex paints aren’t as tough, but they hold up better in regions with high temperatures. here

Single-Part Polyurethane Paints – Urethane paints are also easy to apply, don’t cost nearly as much as two-part polyurethanes, and have a long-lasting gloss. Two-Part Polyurethane Paints – These undisputedly look best and last longest. Many people would even argue they can out-shine a boat’s original gel coat.

Painting your deck is a great way to bring vibrant color to your outdoor living area. Typically, homeowners paint railings, stairs, and posts but stain the decking. That’s because stain tends to hold up better to foot traffic than paint. … Deck paint can be either oil-based or acrylic — both are good products. [links]

Apply the fairing putty. If using an epoxy fairing putty, apply it proud so it stands above the surrounding surface. This way it’s easier to sand down smooth after drying. To fair and smooth it, use a random-orbit sander. Start with heavy grit sandpaper to rough sand the area. For the final smoothing and contouring, switch to finer grit paper. Once you reach 220-grit, you’re ready for primer. here

Thin one-part polyurethane according to the manufacturer’s directions using the specified thinner in the amount suggested according to conditions such as air/hull temperature and humidity. The goal is to thin the paint so it can be applied consistently. Typical thinning for spraying polyurethane paint is anywhere from 5-20%, depending on the paint. Be careful not to over-thin the paint or it will sag when sprayed on the hull, and will lessen gloss retention after curing.

With the roll & tip method, you apply the paint with a roller, then follow immediately with a brush–and a light touch–to smooth out the paint. This method lets you apply paint evenly, and achieve high gloss results that are similar to spraying. It takes a little practice to establish a rhythm, but yields a very smooth finish with no roller or brush marks. It’s also faster than brushing. Both the topside primer and the topside paint can be applied using this method. more

If you decide to use a two-part polyurethane, know that it commonly requires a specific epoxy primer and is very sensitive to precise mix ratios of converter, paint, and reducer. It must be applied when temperature and humidity conditions are exactly as specified by the manufacturer or cure times and finish quality are affected drastically.

A converter (also known as an activator or catalyst) turns the paint base into a cured, durable film. A reducer, or thinner, is added to make the paint a viscosity that will lay down smoothly when brushed, rolled, or sprayed. The amount of reducer added is usually determined by temperature and application method. That is, more reducer is required to thin the paint in cooler weather than in warmer weather. And it’s common for two-part paints to specify a different activator/converter and reducer/thinner when applying by spray method as opposed to application by brush or roller. Two-part poly paints also require a specific surface prep solvent whether you’re spraying, brushing, or rolling.
