Getting here is half the fun aboard a Washington State Ferry! Take a scenic ride through the islands as you make your way to your final destination. You can drive your car right onto the boat, or board as a foot passenger and simply walk on. The ferries run year-round and there are several sailings each day to and from each of the four main islands - Lopez, Orcas, San Juan, and Shaw. An interisland ferry allows island hoppers to travel between the islands and an international ferry offers service to Sidney, B.C. March - December.

A little free publicity for Sea Sense Boating … I spent Sunday through Friday with Capt Carol Cuddyer and Capt. Jill McCarthy as instructors, and Diana as my fellow student, on a 42′ Californian power yacht. I came away with a new confidence in my ability to drive, dock and anchor a boat. I can read a chart, plot a course. I know the Rules of the Road, I can navigate through crab pots, various markers, and how to use the radio. Of course, I have much to learn yet but I’m ready to partner with my husband in life aboard a boat! I highly recommend this company – owned by and operated by women, both licensed captains, extremely knowledgeable and very patient. Carol owns the company with Patti and they have been doing the teaching, moving boats all over (including in other parts of the world), readying folks for handling their own boats for well over 20 years. Love them, love what they do! Gena

* Prices are all-inclusive, with the exception of alcoholic beverages, most dinners and transportation to and from the boat. That means that the cost includes the boat, your accommodations on board, captain/instructor, provisioning for breakfasts, lunches, snacks and beverages, and all taxes, pumpouts, dockage or mooring fees. Dinners are ashore, to sample the island cuisine! There are no surcharges or hidden fees.

These courses listed are “live aboard,” meaning the boat serves as your hotel as well as your classroom. Cabins are mostly double occupancy. In addition to accommodations, the cost of the course includes instruction, all dockage and mooring fees and any cruising taxes. Also included are provisions for breakfasts, lunches, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Dinner is eaten ashore, to enjoy the local specialties. We spend the nights docked at marinas or anchored in wonderful ports and harbors. These live-aboard courses give you the opportunity to really go cruising, because you are living the lifestyle while you learn the skills.
